My husband and I stayed at the Travellers Oasis, it was the first time either of us had ever been at a hostel. Neither of us are big party people although we are young (25 and 29 respectively), so we always thought hostels wouldn't be our scene.I was apprehensive about staying at Traveller's Oasis, but I could not of been happier! We had a double private room. The room was well equipped with a TV (rabbit ears but still had 5 channels I think) DVD, AC (pay as you go), a minifridge, and a semi-private porch (shared with one other room), and confortable bed. The hostel was amazingly clean. The bathrooms and shared areas are deep cleaned daily. The people running it are amazing as well (Hi John and Chris!) If you have stayed at budget hotels but not hostels you will be very happy here in a private room. The hostel is a 3 minute walk to a shopping center and a 10 minute walk to the city center. I will be stay here again next time we head to Cairns. The only complaints I had were if you stay on a Friday or Saturday use your AC to drown out the sound of the drunks from the hostel across the street (with the exception of those 3 or 4 hours the Oasis is quiet and peaceful, we did not have to run our AC anyother night because it was dead silent) and the bathrooms could use a handsoap despenser.

This place is a really cool place to stay while in Cairns. We went there while power-backpacking (3 weeks backpacking trip) in Australia.

The place was really neat. The room we had (twin room) was small with only a small fridge (great for preventing Tim Tams from melting!), but that was all we needed. The "public" areas were very nice, especially the pool and area surrounding. The place was not fully booked, but there were a lot of people staying at the same time as us. But the place was really quiet anyways.

But what stood out from our stay there was the staff. They were amazing. They pick us up at the airport and gave us a lot of info on what to do in Cairns on the way to the hotel. When we were there, they were very nice and helpful with everything we needed (find shops, tour booking, etc.). They even knew us by name from the first day! We were supposed to stay only 2 days but we extended our stay for 2 more days and they were very helpful.

If you want a nice, quiet place with a lot of friendly people, the Travellers' Oasis is definitely a place to go.

We are a mature couple (60+) who spent 4 extremely enjoyable days at this hostel in May 2009. From the moment we were picked up at the airport the service was exceptionally friendly and helpful. All the staff went out of their way to make us feel at home. The room was clean, quiet, and spacious with a large shared balcony; it also had a TV, DVD player and fridge. We prepared our food in a well equipped kitchen which provided free tea and coffee plus many of the sauces, herbs and bits and pieces that you never seem to have yourself. There was also a communal TV room, but if you didn't fancy what was on it was possible to borrow DVDs at no cost to play on the room TV. Although we didn't use them the laundry facilities seemed first rate; the swimming pool also looked inviting for the more energetic. Finally we booked all our local tours through the hostel after being given excellent guidance about which packages would be the best for our requirements; they even gave a lift down to the harbour for the trip out to the reef. All in all it could not have been a better experience and given the chance we will be back. The only downside the weather - even the hostel couldn't fix that.

Stayed here for 4 nights in the beginning of May, stayed in a 4 bed dorm room with friends for $25 AUD per person, per night. This was my first time staying at a hostel, so my expectations were not very high.

The room was basic, just 4 beds, a mirror, and a small 2 level shelf to put some items. It would have been nice to have an end table to put larger items on, but we got by. One of the window's crank did not work, but there was a ceiling fan to circulate the air. The room was clean and in good condition. But I did find a roach on the side of my bed, but to their defense I found roaches in other hotels and B&B's in Australia.

The community facilities were all in good condition and cleaned every morning. The showers were nice and hot. But the soap dispenser did not get refilled and the bathroom light did not get replaced. The kitchen was accommodating with a fridge, microwave, toaster, plates, cups, silverware, and a sink. There were ants crawling around so you have to watch the food you set on the table.

The people were very friendly. They took time to answer all our emails and helped us plan our reef trip. They also have a free airport pickup, just call their toll free number at the airport. Any questions we had about Cairns in terms of where to eat and what to do, they took the time to answer.

The location was good. It was across the street from a local mall and grocery so it was convenient to buy food. But it was "across the railroad", so it wasn't in the most happening location. It felt like we were in a local neighborhood. It took about a 10-15 minute walk to get to the markets/restaurants.

Overall, it was a good experience and good value for the price we paid. If all you're looking for is a place to wash, sleep, and take care of bare essentials, this is a good place to stay.

Travellers Oasis was the perfect place for us to start our trip around Queensland. The room and the baths (shared) were o.k. and the staff was helpful and superfriendly. They organised as everything - a trip to the Great Barrier Reef and a roundtrip with a rented car to the Atherton Tablelands and Cape Tribulation.

We split our stay between two places in Cairns and originally stayed on the Esplanade, which was too long a walk to the Lagoon and city. After switching to Travellers Oasis, we were much happier with the convenience of the location. Anna was extremely friendly when we first got there, and the hostel also gives a few coupons for meal discounts at restaurants in Cairns (the best meal deal - the Wool Shed, huge portions and a drink for just $10).

Our room was decently clean, although we did have a roach scutter in from the main hallway (which didn't scar our stay too badly). The towels provided were a bit damp and smelled a bit funny, but we just used our own instead. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and pots and pans for cooking. The section of the hostel we stayed in only had one shower and sink, but we never had to wait to use them.

Despite the problems with the towels and roach, we still enjoyed our stay and would recommend it as a great hostel for location and value for your money.

We arrived at the hostel late at night and picked up our keys from a pre arranged location and let ourselves into our room for the night. Our room was basic and bedding smelt of damp but other than that it was ok.

This place was not to our taste, however we could see the appeal to the typical backpacker as there are plenty of communal chill out areas and the place had a nice vibe.

Personally I would not return to this Hostel.
