Allot of restaurants in Cairns are struggling to stay afloat which is a shame. Ala Turka has found a good mix of low prices, good location and well prepared meat. They take no short cuts with the cuts of meat used in the main dishes. I had lamb cutlets which were perfectly cooked to my liking and not the gristly, fatty lamb cutlets you often get in restaurants. The main dishes were all about $27 and in my books this makes good value for money. However, the side dishes that come with all main meals left little to be desired. They consist of rice (really plain, boring rice) salad (lettuce, carrot and onion) and tzatzik (homemade and yummy) It feels that this is where they have managed to keep prices down, the side dishes and the drinks. The house wine although only $6.50 a glass, comes out of a flask. I think rice is just about the cheapest starch you can make on mass. I mean it rice even a staple of Turkish cuisine? We were asked to keep our used cutlery from our entrée to use with our main and we were not offered water for the table which is pretty much standard in Cairns restaurants. Overall these small imperfections were ok because the price is right. The Cairns Esplanade is a great location for people watching during dinner so we were happy with Ala Turka. We would probably try a few other restaurants before going back but we would not rule it out.
