5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2013

We stayed at Breakfree when we visited Cairns last September - it was in the perfect location, right near plenty of restaurants and right across the road from the Lagoon, if you don't want to use the on-site pool. We arrived early to the hotel as I had insulin to keep cold and they were happy to store our bags and put my insulin in the fridge until the room was fully cleaned and available. They even gave us a call ahead of our scheduled check-in time and let us take the room early for no extra charge. Our apartment was stunning with views of the lagoon and ocean - which we could see from our spa bath, very romantic!! Staff were more than helpful with everything. Would definitely stay here again. We got it on a deal as we stayed x amount of nights and so it turned out to be very good value for money.

If I have any negatives it was that the bed was a tad hard but we were so exhausted that we slept soundly regardless.

Dear Flashlee
Thank you so much for coming back to BreakFree Royal Harbour and for your review. Both are greatly appreciated. Just letting you and everyone else know that all our king beds are now in the process of having mattress toppers fitted. According to guests who have tried this, it softens the bed and definitely increases the comfort level.
Cheers

It's everything we needed, excellent value, perfect for couples who want to spend less on accommodation and more on the activities that North Queensland has to offer.

The room is large with a decent size balcony and basic kitchen facilities including a mini fridge, microwave and portable hot plate. The round spa bath is a generous size and the bed was super comfy. Its a basic design with simple decor, but it doesn't matter when you spend most of your time out and about.

The only downfall was that the rooms aren't serviced unless you stay over a week (no change of linen or towels etc) and you have to clean your room before you leave, but that's quite normal for most places we've stayed for this price range and location type.

Building is in a fantastic location on the Esplanade with great views of the ocean and lagoon from the higher floors in the middle of the building. Plenty of cafes and restaurants directly beneath the hotel and its an easy walk to many more. Cairns Central shopping is only 3 blocks away (about a 20min walk). Unfortunately we were on the very end of the building so had mostly city views but we could still see the marina and lagoon, we did book last minute so cant really complain.

We will definitely be staying here next time we head up, its such great value!

Room Tip: High floor but in the middle of the building not the end

The location is 2nd to none. Opposite the swimming lagoon, on top of the night markets, step out the door and you are surrounded by all the Esplanade restaraunts, cafees and bars or step out from level1 and you are a couple of mins walk from the shops and supermarkets of Cairns CBD, yet despite the location, because of the layout, the rooms are very quiet. We had an ocean view spa room and the views were nice and the spa was appreciated after a long day hiking in the Atherton Tableland. The rooms were also very generously sized.. I have to mention the gorgeous girl in reception on level1 who was an absolute delight every time we met her. I hope her boss realises what an asset she is.

Room Tip: We had a mates rates deal, stay 3 & pay 2, which made it very affordable. Make sure you cover a...

Location is excellent with direct access from the hotel to the Esplanade. Room was very clean and well presented. The spa, located in the middle of the room, was excellent. Staff pleasant and helpful. All facilities were of a good standard. We enjoyed our stay.

I stayed at breakfree for a week, and the unit had lovely views over looking the esplanade and the ocean. It is a great location - right on the esplanade with parking entry from Abbott st. Walking distance to everything.
However:
* The unit is NOT cleaned over the 7 nights you are there. So no top up of toilet paper, dishwashing liquid and no broom / mop vacuum cleaner to clean the apartment yourself. 2 sachets of dishwashing (powder) are provided but not a dishwasher...?
* The unit has a washing machine but no dryer...?
* I opened the window and it got stuck.
* The room desperately needed painted....
* The bed is on wheels...so if you sit on it, it rolls around the room.
* The cooker... is a dated, dirty tiny $10 electric grill....?
* Tiny bar fridge with almost no freezer.. (communal ice available in reception...)
* Loud - dated air conditioner but no fans...
* The stereo is old an has tape decks with no usb options.

The receptionists seemed friendly, and the room was clean. If the owners/managers replaced the old furnishings ie: the tiny electric oven & tiny bar fridge, this place would be really great. Perhaps also put locks on the bed wheels..

The spa was fantastic.

And maybe service the rooms every 3 days or provide cleaning equipment.

Room Tip: choose an ocean view. looks out over the esplanade and ocean.

Dear daintreeteam,

Many thanks for your review though I was disappointed with some of your comments because we strive so hard to make all our guests enjoy their stay with us. The rate you paid does not include daily servicing but can be arranged at an additional charge. Our policy is that bookings which last for eight or more days are entitled to a free mid-stay service. If guests require extra toilet paper, coffee, tea, whatever it's simply a call to reception.

Our average length of stay is between 2 and 3 nights so we don't have much demand for larger fridges, dishwashers and clothes dryers. We do have units with these features so it's worth requesting these when making your booking if they are important to you. Such requests are always accommodated if possible but cannot be guaranteed.

The portable hot plates (which cost $75.00) are supplied as part of our kitchenette, some owners have installed ceramic cooktops. But, again most guests avail themselves of the incredible number of restaurants and food outlets that are an easy walk away.

Our hospitality category is self-serviced apartments and I am please to advise that we have just this week received our latest independent assessment where we have maintained our 4 star rating.

Best wishes,
Brian

This is an older property situated above the Esplanade's restaurants and the Night Markets. Entrance is from both Abbott St (to level 1 where there is drop-off at Reception) and through the doors next to one of the restaurants on the Esplanade. It is a 5 min walk to shops and supermarkets.

Our unit had a spa bath, and older style furnishings. The view over the Cairns harbour was lovely. The room was very quiet. Pool was acceptable.

It is value for money for what you get, but some issues:

1. 2 singles don't make a king - pushing 2 singles together to make a king can work but really depends on how they fit together. This bed didn't work as the two edges of the beds dug into us. Stick to a queen size.

2. Light from the front door entrance - this shone all night despite the wooden louvred doors put there. This really needs to be fixed with a simple strip along the bottom of the door outside.

3. Kitchenette - yes, it is a kitchenette but it still needs a knife sharpener and a spatula. Standard kitchen items need to be provided.

4. Smoke alarms - the warning sign outside the bathroom about the sensitive smoke alarms is ok but why is this the case? If the alarms are so sensitive that there is a low threshold for the alarm, then maybe this needs to be looked at.

5. Air-conditioning - this was the most annoying issue. You can only adjust temperature, not airflow strength. This is not pleasing when we sat on the couch as it blows straight onto your head and back. Really needs to be addressed.

In conclusion, we would stay here again but these issues would improve the room we stayed in.

Dear ChrisandGardner,

Many thanks for your review. Your comments are appreciated and I would like to address each of them specifically:

1. We have 37 apartments and all but one have the king bed which is 2 king singles zipped together. We have received mostly good comments about our beds but I am aware that this is a subjective issue. I am investigating the installation of extra cushioning on our king beds which we will purchase if they sufficiently solve the problem of the middle ridge to which you and some other guests refer.

2. In my 21 months at BreakFree Royal Harbour not one other gusest has raised the issue of light under the door. Instead of spending many hundreds of dollars to rectify, I suggest that something could be placed next to the door (the cushions off the bed perhaps) to block the light if this is of concern.

3.As a result of your review I have placed an order for a knife sharpenner and spatular to be placed in every apartment, so thank you for this suggestion.

4. The Body Corporate has chosen to err on the side of caution and installed very sensitive smoke detectors. A wise decision when lives could be at risk.

5. The air flow direction can be adjusted so that the cold air is not blowing directly on you. It is possible for guests to adjust but a simple request during business hours would have ensured that one of our staff could have done this for you.

With regard to your description of Royal Harbour as an "older property" and your unit having "older style furnishings", I would like readers (potential guests) to know that the building was completed in 1997 and that furniture in rooms is updated regularly.

Thanks again and best wishes,

Brian

The location of this hotel is fantastic. It offers free parking and great views from the higher floors. The reception area is only open from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM and there is no maid service while you are there unless you arrange it and pay extra for it. We stayed in a one bedroom with pull out sofa and a balcony. There is a washing machine in the unit which is great. There were a few bugs in our room and the bathroom shower curtain smelled very moldy. In all fairness in a tropical location, it's hard to keep things bug and mold-free. I would recommend it for families but don't expect a four star stay.

Room Tip: If you are driving to this hotel, enter the parking on Abbott street and not on the Espelanda. The b...

Dear BTT65

Many thanks for your review. We do get a fairly significant proportion of our international guests who expect reception to be open 24 hours and for the rooms to be serviced daily. I am happy to clarify that we are not a "hotel" in that sense of the word. Also we do not have room service, a restaurant or mini bars in our rooms. Our hospitality category is "Self-serviced Apartments" and we are reviewed annually by an independent rating system where we currently are rated as four stars.

All our apartments have one bedroom with a king size bed which can be split into two single beds. Most rooms have a sofa bed for a third person. There is a kitchen which is fully equipped with the exception of an oven and a dishwasher and all rooms include a washing machine. The lounge room includes a flat screen TV and a DVD player for movies or music. Within meters of our front doors are many restaurants or take-away food stalls including the Food Court directly under us, so most of our guests choose to eat out.

Thanks again for your stay and your review.

Cheers
Brian
