“great quiet hotel”
Reviewed July 12, 2010

I am not sure if it was because I had been staying in hostels for weeks before, but this hostel seemed like a palace when we arrived! It's very quiet and has pretty grounds around the rooms and pool. The rooms are very clean and well kept. Service was great. Not a far cab ride away from the waterfront and downtown. I would stay here again!

I stayed here with my daughter, as I had 2 good holidays here previously. Nothing had really changed since 1989 and 2000. I love the pools and gardens there, and also the rooms were comfortable and spacious. The bed settee in the lounge was useful, as my daughter said I snored. As if! Kitchen was good, and we were able to buy cereal and milk in the shop. Yes, everything did close early and others said that too, It would have been nice to have another drink by the pool. No trouble with mozzies and staff very helpful. Meals we had there were very good. New seating arrived in foyer as we left. Would use again. Its just kinda nice.

Cairns Colonial Club Resort - Cairns Australia

This is where we stayed as our first accommodation for our first leg of the east coast portion of the Aussie Explorer. We were here during May 2010 for a few nights.
It was a decent place with a nice clean room. Had a nice pool and good workout area.
The lobby was setup like a fancy resort and was quite roomy. There was a restaurant that offered very expensive food. Good location and good way to start the east coast portion of Australia.

Some down points was it was far from the main town and in the middle of no where almost.
Nothing nearby within walking distance, so one had to taxi into town.
As well the restaurant was kind of pricey as we had meal vouchers only good for one of the days we were there.

On a good note I would recommend this hotel as it was nice and clean and quiet. I would recommend it more for singles and couples. May not recommend for families as not many good things available for children at this location.

WE were moved herewhen our preferrd accommodation sold out, so not our choice
however it's a large place with good facilities - pools etc, but a bit run down. The place needs a good refurbishment.

Because we had transferred, we kept the old (very cheap price) and had the the bonus of a good upstairs room overlooking one of the pools. Some of the ground floor rooms were overlooked - a bit like motel rooms, so insist on an upstairs room.

With three young children, it is becoming very difficult to find a hotel that can accommodate us in just one room. Most hotels do not allow more than 4 people in a room therefore it was wonderful to arrived at 2:00 a.m. for our 7 night stay and find 3 single beds already set up for our children. The linen was very clean, practically new. The room had a refrigerator and a sink, with dishes in the cabinets, and two TVs with very few channels (one in the bedroom, the other in the sitting area where the kids were staying). The room itself was dated, small, and old looking, but again very clean. The staff was very friendly; the laundry rooms throughout the facility were very convenient; the three pools were great and had plenty of sitting and clean towels. We thought the restaurant was very expensive (about $15 for a tropical breakfast and $23 for the cooked one) and the runny egg substitute were quiet unique, but the french fries by the pool were worth every penny. Unless you are planning on renting a car, this hotel is not within walking distance to anything, and the free shuttle service end at 6:00 p.m. which would force you to eat at their restaurant or pay for a taxi.

The rooms are decent. They are clean and have fridges. Some people on my tour complained of bugs in the rooms but I didn't have a problem.

The pools and the resort grounds are very cool. The resort is located kind of far out of town and their shuttle service wasn't very good, so expect to take a cab to and from town.

I will say it was nice to be outside the hustle and bustle of the town center, if you are looking to relax. If you are looking to hit up the nightlife in Cairns, you should probably stay in a more central location.

Beers and food at the poolside restaurant/bar is decent and not over priced.

The internet is kind of expensive. There is a fitness center with really old equipment but it is better than nothing. FYI there is no treadmill.

Stayed here for 3 nights after a recommendation from a friend who stayed here a couple of years ago. The hotel just seemed a bit run down and hardly open at all. Everywhere closed early even when we were sat eating and drinking as they were not busy - not exactly what we wanted to hear on our wedding anniversary and wanted to make a special night of it. We spoke with another couple who had been going there for 10 years and they said they wouldn't be returning again as it had deteriorated so much.

The hotel appeared to be in the middle of nowhere - it seemed like an industrial estate and even though there was a courtesy coach they stopped pretty early and a taxi cost about 25 dollars.

The fact you had to pay for Internet access also did not impress me much - especially as it was soo dear. The room was generally clean but there were ants all over it around the headboard and by TV as well as in the bathroom.

Free transfers to and from the airport were good and the staaff were generally pleasant especially a nice Malaysian waiter who couldn't do enough to help us. The food in the restaurant was quite nice but a fusion cooking that just didn't work . We tried the poolside cafe for another option but the food was just not good.

The reception staff who helped us to organise our trips were superb and were very helpful. On the whole I wouldn't choose to stay there again but would stay in town as the hotels seemed much nicer.
