Cairns Colonial Club Resort
Ranked #40 of 64 Hotels in Cairns
Reviewed April 24, 2014

I don't know why people wrote such terrible reviews. We booked four nights on trivago for 66 Aussie dollars a night. We got a special on a king room. It's absolutely perfect. Comfy beds, nice tv and perfect AC. The colonial building is indeed a bit dated and tons of Asian tourist buses come but nothing wrong there. It's indeed not a top notch luxury pad but at 66 Australian dollars a night what would one expect? Would happily stay here again!

We booked this hotel since it was relatively close for a late arrival from Auckland and a early departure at 6:00 AM flight out of Cairns to the US the next day. The lobby was okay, typical lobby, spend the money here but this is where it stopped. We going to our room we noticed how dirty everything and lack of maintenance the grounds seemed. We entered the room and saw peeling paint, dirty walls, rusty and filthy everything. Do not stay here what ever the price. I am really miffed how it can rate higher.

Cons
Worn, dirty, unmaintain rooms, poor bedding.
Dirty grounds
Lack of maintenance
Away from town - taxi to town abt $20

Pros
Hotel bus shuttles to town $4 per person fairly regular schedule
Close to airport but about a $25 cab tab.

Stayed for three nights at this hotel in April, I would say slept for three nights but that would be a lie seeing as I'm not sure I slept. The staff were fine, friendly and did their jobs. However the room was not just tired, it was exhausted. There was a one inch gap under the door so anything could crawl in, I blocked it with pillows overnight. The lock on the door didn't lock which normally wouldn't be too much of an issue but this was somewhere I wanted to make sure I was safe in my room. There seemed to be a large contingency of what I can only describe as " workers " they seem to have booked out a job lot of rooms and were working nearby. They sat outside the rooms of an evening smoking, drinking and just generally being very disrespectful to other guests. The hotel obviously caters for large tour groups from the far east, hence the chopsticks to eat your noodles or seaweed with at breakfast. I have no issue with tour groups but the ones that were there for our brief stay were beyond rude. They were disrespectful, arrogant, noisy and generally not very nice. The hotel is also a fair way out of town, a taxi ride or the shuttle bus is highly recommended, it would be a long, long walk and I'd question how safe it would be. I would under no circumstances stop here again, very, very disappointing.

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

Thank you for making the time to share your feedback, it is important to us. Being a 345 room hotel, it can be busy. We have people staying from all over the world. Some travel in groups with family and friends - many on their own when on business. We are fortunate to have a great team and they will certainly appreciate your kind comments - thank you! Apologies for not having met your expectations - we will focus on the areas you highlighted to improve and hope you will consider staying with us again when next in Cairns.
Kind regards - Susan

I am writing this from my room before I go looking for somewhere else to stay.

Bus groups smoking, drinking and yelling all along the balcony.

The air conditioning is on 16c and has no effect.

The milk in the fridge is off!

Management say they will look into these problems when they are less busy!

Never complained about anything in my life but we have come here on our honeymoon to find this far from 4.3 star accommodation which it was advertised at via discover Australia and then on the website directly. No free wi-wi in the rooms, t.v.'s would be the first flat screens that ever came out. Furniture is so outdated in rooms. The so called "beach" that the hotel is supposed to be on is sand at the end of the pool. The beach and anything to do in cairns is miles away, it is NOT in central cairns like it was advertised. The staff were great and very friendly and the restraunt was great if you have plenty of money. If you can get a room at a cheap price it is fine to stay here for a night or two for somewhere to sleep if you have a hire car to get anywhere and If you don't expect much from your accommodation. Have stayed in better low cost budget motels in Melbourne.

We appreciate your feedback and wish to extend our apologies if you were mislead by your agent. The Hotel is not located by a 'beach'. We are in fact 10 minutes from the Cairns City Centre and enjoy a tropical oasis of expansive gardens and three swimming pools which many find captivating. Your positive positive comments about the staff were nice to receive and we will be sure to pass them on to the team. Whilst we may not have met your expectations, we hope you will give us the opportunity to do so in the future.
Kind regards - Susan
