“Good value, be mindful there can be Chinese tour groups”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

Given I had a rental car on my Cairns holiday, staying slightly out of the centre of town wasn't a huge issue. The Cairns Colonial Club has ample parking for guests, and with the resort stretching a whole block, there is a carpark near the front reception area, as well as a separate good sized off-street carpark at the rear of the premises.
The premises were large and overall nicely designed, with lots of water, gardens and other features to keep it visually interesting.
Service was professional, and I appreciated that the staff member checking me in didn't immediately jump into "you're a stupid tourist who's misread the terms of what you've bought" mode when I questioned him regarding the inclusion of breakfast in my room rate. They initially claimed it was not included, but I knew that it had been included in my booking, and after some searching through emails, the staff member was able to confirm that I was correct, and made arrangements for me to have breakfast the following morning. When I had issues with the TV remote control, a staff member also promptly came and attended to it - though the remote seemed to fix itself after a while!
I can't quite remember whether the new free-to-air digital TV channels were available at this place because they use one of those funny hotel TV systems from memory. If they aren't available, this would certainly be one improvement that could be made.
Be wary when booking the most discounted rate on most of the hotel booking sites, they offer a good "early bird" discount, but apart from reducing the room rate, they (a little unfairly in my opinion) also remove the breakfast inclusion.
As the resort seems to get a fair bit of business from Chinese tour groups (fair enough, they are a business seeking customers to remain profitable after all so why not let them subsidise the relative value-for-money of the place), I was a bit wary of staying here. Luckily given that I have sleeping difficulties, I was placed in a quiet part of the resort and had no issues with the noise, bordering on chaos, that these groups tend to create. There were a few of them at breakfast but on this occasion they were only moderately noisy and kept some level of order.
The level of amenity in the room was good, cleanliness was acceptable, and overall I was fairly pleased with the value for money I got here. Breakfast was nothing special, fairly basic and standard fare with the "continental" breakfast, or the cooked buffet could be added for $11 per person.
If your concern is not necessarily a central location and flashy modern rooms then I see nothing wrong with staying here. The cheapest rooms are quite small and probably wouldn't offer all the amenities of the larger rooms, but they do offer fairly good value at a place that has the resources to attend to your concerns if you aren't happy with something. I'd stay here again if the circumstances called for it.

Stayed at this lovely property with really great staff. I arrived late and the staff was able to check me in efficiently without any extra delays giving me a room upgrade as they had already seen me as a no-show and given my room to someone else. The pool area was great for relaxing and a great place to recharge batteries after a long journey

Had overnight stay. Room Reasonable meals and bar facilities good.Staff excellent Value for money. A little to far from the downtown nightlife to walk . Pool and playground excellent for families. Some rooms still need refurbishing with a repaint, new aircon,TV etc Bathroom could have done with a complete makeover.

The room I stayed in was basic but clean. The bed was comfortable and there was a good selection of pillows from which to choose from.

My only bugbears about the hotel are that the walls are very thin and that the door didn't feel overly secure.

I was located at the junction of two pathways and a stairwell. This meant there was a lot of foot traffic (with the associated noise) and strong lighting shining through the curtains throughout the night. Also I could readily hear my neighbours packing for their flight the next day.

The door to the room also didn't feel secure. It could have been that the walls were only couple of cm thick and thus psychologically I thought the door could be kicked in easily.

This hotel is close to the airport but not the city centre, so it's a good stopover destination if you've got an early morning flight.

If you are staying in Cairns this is not the place for you as it is a long way out of the centre - too far to walk. There is nowhere else to eat in the vicinity so you really have to eat in the hotel. However, if you just want a bed before catching a plane, the location is perfect as the airport is 5 mins away. It is a slightly dated place once you are out of the reception area. The rooms are adequate in size but typical for an Ibis. It was a fair walk from the room to the reception and restaurant. There was a room with PCs and limited free internet access; this also had free tea and coffee on hand. The restaurant offers an inclusive buffet of soup, salad and desserts for $19.90. It was OK but it lacked anything substantial to have with the salad. there was plenty of free on-site parking.

I liked the pictures and property description which may be viewed on the Accor web site and decided to book one night at this hotel when travelling through Cairns with my daughter. Very disapointed, (fortunately, I only booked one night at this hotel). I will not stay at this hotel again. The hotel is very far from (I do not think that this fact is made very clear at time of booking) the city / espanade and extremely difficult to find, (especially at night). Although the lobby looks lovely from the car upon arrival, (one gets a good impression of the property appearance upon arrival) public areas, pool area, room, restaraunt are all in poor shape and desperately in need of major cleanup, repair and / or modernisation. Other than the gentleman who was working the front desk at check-in... staff members generally appeared to be more interested in conversing with other staff rather than esuring the comfort and satisfaction of guests. This was my most disapointing stay at an Accor brand hotel. From what I saw, it was all too clear that major investment in the property is required and staff need re-training. This could be a really great place to stay with family. But a lot of work will be required in order to make this so.

The place felt like an shack. Everything felt old and creaky. But very clean and it does have some charm about it. Lots of children and families running around and the pool is great. For the price this is a great hotel and I would recommend to others.
