With ATE 2014 about to start at the Convention Centre hotels in and around the CBD were either full or very expensive so we decided to try something different for this 2 night stay.
The Mercure is a little out of town (just North of the hospital and about a 20-30 min walk along the esplanade) but offered great value.
We opted for their top-tier room with a wonderful seaview from the top floor. The room itself was a little dated but was clean and very comfortable; huge with lovely high ceilings, comfy bed and as quiet as a church (apart from the occasional plane noise from the airport). The bathroom was small but adequate. Their pool is currently being rebuilt but there is (apparently) an arrangement with a nearby Novotel if you need to get wet.
Staff were friendly and polite. We didn't try the cafe or restaurant, preferring to go into town each night.
Given that this cost us about $100pn less than a standard room at the Pullman Reef Casino I reckon it's good value. We didn't mind the walk into town but if you don't want to walk there is an hourly hotel shuttle bus into the CBD.

Room Tip: Worth the upgrade

Atractive gardens, Pleasant room, friendly and helpful staff. Our room overlooked the mountains, why does everybody want to face the sea? whether we were lucky or just because we were booked through The Flight Centre, but our room was massive, at its biggest 9 metres by 16metres, with a cane light fitting, a metre across. Food in the restaurant was very good. the courtesy bus was very useful, but did fluctuate from empty to very busy. The bus, manned by the reception staff did extra runs if required. If staying in cairns again I would stay here. As we did both the Barrier reef tour and the Daintree and Cape Tribulation trips, we seemed to be covering the same piece of road to Port Douglas, possibly we should have found a hotel at Port Douglas for one of the nights-the night market in Cairns has to be seen! so you need to stay at least one night there

Room Tip: I say go for the mountain view, the sea is everywhere

Spent a short night here and happy with what we received for price we paid. Room was clean with 2 double beds and clean bathroom with powerful hot shower. Fridge in room was empty on arrival which was perfect for us as we could store our own food rather than overpriced minibar items.

All staff except one man at reception were a pleasure to deal with and provided advice on our onward travels. Service was extremely slow when we requested an item from housekeeping - would prefer they just tell us they are short staffed rather than pretending it is on its way, resulting in 4 phone calls from us chasing a single item. We would have happily picked it up from reception had they just been honest from the beginning.

Do not understand the $50 deposit system against 'damages' in the room. We gave a cash deposit which was returned to us as soon as we checked out - before anyone had looked at our room to see if there was damage making it meaningless. Don't understand why they do not authorise a card like all other major hotels.

Overall good value for money and we would return if in Cairns again

Dear Innocent26,

Thank you for your recent review on Trip Advisor and allowing me the opportunity to respond to your comments. I am glad to hear overall of your thoughts that you enjoyed the hotel however there are a few items that I need to follow up with my team.

I apologies for the confusion regarding the security deposit taken on check in. The security deposit is not really in case you damages the room but to allowed you to open an account on your room and charge any incidentals you may have during your stay like restaurant bill, room service, pay movie etc. If our guests have prepaid their accommodation in advance we will take $50 per night for security deposit. If guests need to pay for the accommodation as well we will then hold the amount of the room plus the $50 per night. The security is return on check out if the guest uses the same credit card to settle their account. Otherwise it will depend of the different bank policies which sometimes can hold the amount up to 14 business days.

As for your feedback regarding the housekeeping, I have addressed your comment to our Executive Housekeeping and our Front Office Manager to discuss with their teams

Once again thank you for your response and we hope to welcome you back again in a near future

Kind regards,
Annick Dubois

Fairly basic overall - The rooms are clean & reasonably modern - the bathrooms are adequate but a tad tired, a bit grubby and smallish. The bed seems to be a lumpy, lump of foam with synthetic, rubbery pillows - not the most comfortable.

The hotel is a fair way (by foot at least) out from central Cairns

The hotel runs an (approx 11 seat) shuttle bus which is complimentary - (about a 5-7minute run)
Most of the time it is empty, but during busy (dinner) periods it becomes a rugby scrum, and it is every man for himself. A suggestion was made to the staff to make the rugby scrum a little more orderly, by providing a free ticketing system, or a queuing system - so that those who have been waiting the longest can get the first shuttle, alas the suggestion was not appreciated by the front desk staff "as the bus is complimentary" - and therefore you can cop the rugby scrum, or catch a taxi. In fact his only response to each suggestion was it is 'complimentary'. (Perhaps he thought he was auditioning for a new run of 'Faulty Towers' as Manuel) I realised not long after starting the conversation that beating my head against a brick wall until I was unconscious would be more pleasurable than continuing the futile discussion on this matter.

In all fairness, the rest of the staff were pleasant, it was just one rude guy who let the hotel down badly and set the tone for the rest of the stay.

Last but not least the hotel is almost directly under final approach of the Cairns airport. So depending on the runway in use you will either get departure noise from the primary runway as the aircraft turn away from the hills or occasionally arrival noise as aircraft fly nearly overhead if the wind is from the north.

Dear Hairyspleen,

Thank you for your recent comments on Trip Advisor, it is important that we hear from our guests so we can review our products and service.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologies for not meeting your expectations on your recent stay; with regards to your shuttle bus driver related comments, I have discussed with our Front Office Manager to review. The hotel receives many great comments on happy and accommodating staff, I am concerned that this not the impression you received on this occasion.

Once again, Hairyspleen, I thank you for sharing your experience at the Mercure Cairns Harbourside and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.
