The highlight here is the red arrow walk that leaves from the RHS of the gardens and heads up through the rainforrest onto a small range over looking the airport . Take some water as its a solid walk , but justified by the view at the top . Wait a littl while at the top and watch some planes take off

These botanical gardens were of a world class standard.
They are situated in Edge Hill a northern suburb of Cairns. There was a huge variety of tropical plants in a variety of different environments from greenhouses to swamplands. The area was beautifully landscaped and there were numerous well paved paths and boardwalks to follow. I particularly loved looking at the orchids and the bromeliads. This would be a gardener's paradise.

We enjoyed walking around these gardens, seeing and learning about some of the fascinating Australian flora, and taking photographs of the bizarre-looking spiders. The gardens were a good size to be able to see in a half-day. Shady portions provided a pleasant respite from the heat, although bug-spray wouldn't have been a bad thing to have handy. The plaques were informative, and there were lots of maps stationed around so even our directionally-challenged family was able to find our way around easily! We all got a good laugh from the lily-pond, which was more like a lily-puddle, but all the other sights more than made up for a bit of disappointment in that! We all thought that the fern house was particularly gorgeous. It was also fun to get to see some Australian birds, as well as hear their calls during our whole walk.

A few days later, we greatly enjoyed the red arrow walking path up Mt. Whitfield. Wish we'd discovered this path earlier, as it would be a fantastic loop for an exercise jog/climb. From what I saw, we weren't the only people who thought so!

Nice well manicured gardens suitable for photography, walking or a family day. The nearby waling trails are highly recommended. Be sure to take plenty of mosquito repellent as the surrounding area is teaming with insects.

This is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have ever visited. It's tropical and cool and there are plenty of places for families or couples to sit down and enjoy a picnic. The Indigenous plant area is a special highlight. This is a really unique place - some of the plants are just incredible. Even better - it's free! I would recommend visiting the gardens even if you are not really into horticulture or plants that much.
