Dropped into the distillery on our way to Port Douglas and really enjoyed the tasting. They were very generous with the tasting and were very helpful also providing info about each spirt. The grounds of the property was very well done including a small managerie of animals. I would recommend to anyway visiting the area.

Lots of wet weather in FNQ so rather than head to a soggy Daintree from out digs in Port Douglas, we decided to head into the Atherton Tablelands. After the obligatory stop at Barron Falls near Kuranda, our wanderings took us towards the town of Atherton (very cute and worthy of more time next time) and a short diversion off the Bruce Highway to the Mt Uncle Distillery.

Having sampled distilled produce in higher latitudes (whiskeys in Scotland and Tasmania) , I was interested to see what the tropics would yield other than rum; which of course Bundaberg is already famous for.

$10 down for a taste of four spirits; a honeyed vodka, botonicals gin, aged rum and a whiskey and I was left ruing that i had to drive 80 or so kms back to Port Douglas. The vodka and gin were unique enough to have the credit card slide across the counter. I'm not a rum person but was impressed. And the whiskey would easily stand up to a lowalands offering such as Glenlivet (my personal preference is for an Islay malt).

Tasting was followed by a lovely lunch at Bridge's Cafe, great food served by very friendly staff.

Can highly recommend this as a diversion from the usual fare in the Cairns district.

Had seen this distillery advertised in all the tourist brochures and as we are rum drinkers we were eager to try new ones. The entry was looking good and we were excited about our tasting trip. Lady behind bar was finishing serving another couple and then another group came in just after us. We had to ask what the go was, tour or sit at the bar? She replied $10 each and put one set of tasting glasses on the bar and then talked to the other group the whole time. No history of the spirits or property or introduce herself, she did however try to say a local sugar cane farm that the spirits were made from but said to the Cairns people 'you would know it better than me'.
There was a whiskey which my partner tried and liked it so said would buy a bottle. The reply was that's $150 due limited edition. He purchased it only to add to our limited edition collection at home. It was wrapped up and handed to us and then off to talk to the other group. We still to this day don't know anything about it. We did send a feedback email but have not yet had reply. Felt very deflated after our visit.
