“A must-do in Cairns”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Wonderful half-day activity. Best to do train first and Skyrail second. Train is a gorgeous vintage one, very long and well-restored. It's a magnificent trip leaving you boggling at the engineering involved in building the line by hand. The Kuranda village is OK - a bit too much tourist tat for me -but the little wildlife park was enchanting. And the Skyrail down through the rainforest was breathtaking - no good for any fear of heights, but a very special experience made all the better for the silence, with no commentary.

“Awesome Skyrail - float above the rainforest”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

A must-do to get a different perspective of rainforest. Have been on a number of skyrails over the years, but this one is great because it skims across the top of the rainforest giving you an appreciation of it's natural beauty but also the expansiveness of it.

“An extra star because my kid loved it”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

After a lot of research we decided to move up by the skyrail and come down by the scenic rail. The primary reason is that since we wanted to go as late as possible ......we took only one way transfers to the skyrail station.our return was back to cairns station...
Our iternary was 1045 h move up by the sky rail and 2 pm move down by the scenic rail...with 2 hrs plus time in kuranda.the advantage of going late is that you can move out of your accomodation at a leisurely time...since it is a vacation....that's why we didn't want to get into a package.we did our booking through visitcairns.com...and we're lucky since it was a last minute booking and it was school holidays...

Skyrail....we were promptly picked up by our operator at 0950 h from our hotel on the esplande and after making our payments to the driver he gave us both our tickets ...skyrail and train return...
At the skyrail station we were informed by the driver where to go and for a few folks he even went out and guided them where to go and what to do....so that was good.however it is quite self explanatory and easy.the advantage of early booking was that you already have your ticket so you just go directly on the line for boarding instead standing at the ticket window....this is an advantage of tor companies.well at our time chosen it wasn't too full so we actually boarded our skyrail before 1045 .
there are a total of 3 legs on this journey of 7.5 km.the fist one is when you can see the coat and the flatlands.thesecond when you are over the rainforest and the last when you are over the hills and forests with waterfalls and a river to look at.its quite enjoyable .in between the legs there are small boardwalks to move around and gives a bit of time to we the rush of boarding if any.skyrail seats 6 but if you are a family they are happy to give you your own cable car...like we to or the three of us.arrive at kuranda stop..picked up a fridge magnet as a souvenir....next stop kuranda markets

Kuranda...it is a small place with numerous tourist markets and stuff.on the whole it's a bit pricey like any tourist destination.there are a number of options like butterfly park and wildlife and cruises etc...but all these are available all the wy from cairns to daintree.so decide what you want to see where...ultimately in cairns there are two animals you old be interested in firstly the crocs and the koala and maybe snakes.
We decided to only stay for 2 hrs at kuranda as it is more than enough....it's a bit pricey for food too...but we actually carried a few nibbles with us including soft drink cairns etc...however you can buy ...and if you don't mind spending more everything is available.....but if you spend more than a couple of hours you will get tired and eventually sit at a shop and buy something unless you ar doing one of the parks.there is a guy who does a cartoon sketch in 2 minutes...highly recommended.

Scenic railway.....anyways 1:20 pm we decided to make our way to the railway station which is just next to the skyrail station and walking distance..from kuranda markets....you will be given your seat numbers here if not allotted earlier as well as your coach number and you can ask for engine facing seats if you come a bit early..as we reached the station the trains were standing and we just glanced at the gold class..and since my son liked it we decided to upgrade....and also we were a bit tired so an indulgence back home would be relaxing and refreshing.....and so it was.
You can start boarding the gold class at 1:30 pm and on arrival you are given a small packet of Macedonian nuts and asked your choice of beverage from your hostess.....which is given almost immediately....before the journey begins.....refills are unlimited I think but in a 2 hour journey generally people would have 3 or maybe 4 drinks...the beverages includes alcoholic drinks as well as soft drinks....as the train moves you stop at Barron falls a short distance away..10 minute stop for photographs....as you move from this station you are served a cheeses and dried fruit platter and drinks refilled ....
All through the journey there are announcemen made bout th various scenic spots..so that is good,it's a 2 hr journey and eating, drinking nd clicking it passes by nice and comfortable.the first stop to get off is freshwater..where most tour operators group get off fin fact lost everyone...we were going till cairns another 15 mins away.at cairns the station is next o cairns central plaza and about 4 blocks away from esplande ...an easy walk if you do not want a cab...we walked as we were in high spirits ......

Tips:
1. Suggest go up the skyrail and come back the train if you want to end your journey at cairns and visit the markets after that.
2. Unless you wanna watch the parks at kuranda..2 hrs is more than enough at kuranda.
3. The stuff available for sale at kuranda is available at cairns and port douglas..at least some of it...so choose where you wanna buy and what you wanna buy...I maybe wrong here but we were not the shopping types. At least of the heritage stuff and we had no knowledge too.
4. Gold class costs you 47 dollars extra per person than normal fare...you get beer, wine, sparkling wine, soft drink tea coffee ....unlimited..but you may not be able to have more than 3-4 drinks..you get a cheese platter as well a small lapel pin and pen as a souvenir plus a postcard to post anywhere in the world...the seats are very comfortable and its very comfortable...but if you have too many kids may not be a good option as there is no kids half price or discount as in the regular fare..

“Skyrail better than train”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We took the Kuranda scenic railway up and the Skyrail back down. The views from the the skyrail were spectacular and we enjoyed the two brief stops at the platforms on the way down. We were told that the trip down would take a 75 minutes, but it was much quicker than that, closer to 50 minutes. This could have been due to it being a slow day, but we would have stayed up top a little longer if we had known the trip down was going to be so quick. Overall a nice trip down.
