Whilst in Cairns, I took the opportunity to drive back to Townsville through the tableland stopping at "Coffee Works" in Mareeba, the "Tolga Wood Works, the "Crystal Caves" in Atherton and a swim in the falls at Malanda. All in a days drive and gave my daughter some of the experiences I had as a child growing up in the North.

Loved everything about the day from the waterfalls, food, spanish castle, boulder swimming, and our guide was very knowledgable, having lots of local info about everything from buildings, history, farming and tourist highlights

We thoroughly enjoyed the drive along cane fields and picturesque waterfalls! Visit to Milla Milla falls alone was worth the full day trip. There are couple of other falls but not easily accessible by foot (young children). The castle was waste of money, though we liked the story behind it.

I come up here every end of the month almost and it never seems to disappoint. The weather is always very good up there you just know it if you come from Cairns. The drive either up past the little town of Kuranda or down through Gordonvale and up the Gillies highway are both fantastic. I do know that going up Gillies feels like it's faster and also you get to the major tourist attraction much faster which is quite right. There is lot of history as well of the place and the early settlers and I am still discovering new attractions up there apart from getting up to fly my model gliders so it looks I will be visiting for a while yet.

There is a lot of tourist attractions like maybe pay a visit to the beautiful Lake Barinne where you can have breakfast or lunch or go on the Lake Barinne cruises spotting wildlife around the Lake. Now if that's not enough maybe head to Lake Eacham the best place to have a swim or relax and just lie in the sun. You can also go and check out the impressive Curtain Fig Tree and the wonderful Millamilla Falls, Zillie Falls and maybe cool off with a drink or two at the historic Yungaburra pub right in the centre of the town. There is so much to see you will enjoy it.

I know there is quite a bit to check out and I have just touched on the known ones which I have been and visited. Even the drive itself around the Atherton Tablelands is most fantastic and comfortable. The roads are magnificent and there is so much space in between the little towns and farms you will be amazed. A totally relaxed atmosphere up there and quiet different from Cairns. So do get away from the coastal heatwave and visit the cool Atherton Tablelands when you are in North Queensland next.

Such a fine place with fantastic weather all year round you will remember.

Hire a car even just for a day to do this area. That way you can dash in and out of the main road for a crater lake with devonshire tea, a waterfall or six and, a winery or cottage industry. Roads are terrific. Leaving cairns at about 8ish you will be home before dark ...depending on how long you swim under the waterfalls!
