“Fantastic Scenery on the Tablelands”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

It's well worth the effort to hire a car in Cairns and travel to the Atherton Tablelands. It's less than an hour's drive from Cairns to Kuranda which is a lovely village in a rainforest setting. A half an hour's drive on and you arrive in Mareeba which is the centre of coffee growing on the tablelands. There are some wonderful coffee shops offering a huge variety of locally produced coffee products. Tolga Woodworks near Atherton has some beautifully crafted timber products featuring the unique timbers of North Queensland. Atherton is the centre of the dairying industry. Not far from Atherton are the beautiful crater lakes of Lake Eacham and Barrine. You can take a boat cruise around Lake Barrine and view the interesting wildlife of the area. Don't forget to see the Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra. If you have time to stay overnight, a trip to the Herberton Historical Village is very worthwhile.

“Lots to See and Do”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

I really enjoyed driving around the tablelands. I first stopped in Karunda for coffee and the obligatory photo with a Koala. Then on to short hikes, historic towns and gourmet food stops. If you are in the area and have the time, I highly recommend getting out of Cairns and seeing the real charm of Queensland.

“Great day's outing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2012

A great way to spend a day but you will need a car.
Go up thru Kuranda to Mareeba, Atherton then down Gillies Hwy via Gordonvale back to Cairns.
Heaps to see, including Lakes Barrine & Eacham, the Crater, aircraft museums in Mareeba and many other attractions.
Check the brochures in your hotel for a list of things to see up there.

“Go for the gorges not the markets”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2012

Kuranda markets and attractions were no draw for us but the Barron Gorge and walk way were great. It is less expensive and more flexible to rent a car than go by rail or sky cable and you can then drive to places south like Yungaburra to try to spot a platypus or tree kangaroo at the creek walk by the platypus viewing platform. (Best chance is if you stay over night to be in the cute town when the animals are most active.

“Great day trip from cairns”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

The Atherton tablelands is one of the agricultural gems in the cairns hinterland. It is peppered with gourmet food establishments. From roasted macadamias, to gourmet coffee, and dairy products, the tablelands offer a great day trip either by yourself or to see the most, a tour. There is also a waterfall tour that reaches some truly iconic and scenic locations such as Mila Mila falls. Not to be missed.
