We did our own "Food Trail" and had a fantastic time - if you have a car this is a great day trip from Cairns but you will need a full day.

Our family did a self drive for 2 days from Port Douglas staying overnight in Atherton, then down to Cairns. We had a great time exploring the waterfalls, Mt Hypipamee crater, and hinterlands towns and lakes. Yungaburra is a small pretty little town, while Atherton is much bigger with supermarket etc. The info centre at Atherton is very good with extremely helpful ladies.

We enjoyed picking our own delicious strawberrys at Shaylee Strawberry farm, and looking for platypus at Platypus Park in Atherton. We went at dusk and were very lucky to see 4 platypus and 2 turtles. Definitely recommended free activity for the whole family (even our adult children loved it!) We also went to see both the Curtain Fig and the Cathedral Fig trees, absolutely awesome!

Another must do is Granite Gorge which was a highlight for us. $10 each was good value for an afternoon spent walking over huge boulders, enjoying lovely views, feeding the very cute little rock wallabies and seeing turtles in the pond. Plus Snowy the Cockatoo had his afternoon cracker with us as we ate our icecreams at the centre after our walk.

We also enjoyed visiting Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine, where we had afternoon tea at the historic tea house overlooking the lake. Also visited Coffee Works which has an amazing shop selling beautiful art and crafts as well as good coffee. We had lunch at de Millaa's cafe in Millaa Millaa and highly recommed it. As a coeliac I was wondering if I could get anything gluten free in this small village, but de Millaa's had lots of options and I enjoyed some delicious pumpkin soup and garlic bread.

The road back down to Cairns is a bit windy, but wasn't as bad as I thought it might be! We noticed the temperature was a few degrees warmer in Cairns than it had been up in the tablelands.

We went on a Food Trail tour which was very interesting - coffee plantation, macadamia nut farm, dairy, fruit wines and lovley scones and cream for afternoon tea.

Have now been here many times and the experiences are diverse - from the crater lakes to rainforests to beautiful historic towns like Yungaburra and then on top of that is the wildlife experiences such as rifle birds displaying, brolgas arriving in their hundreds at Bromfeld swamp, waatching a platypus feeding its young.
The experiences are many and diverse and would appeal to all interests.
I would definitely suggest getting out of Cairns and enjoying at least 2 nights, preferably in the crater lakes region and/or the rainforests.

With the local bus company, we enjoyed Kuranda, Mareeba and Atherton daily tour. Such good value from the railway station depot, to see the country towns.
