Just don't try and go to Atherton on a Sunday for anything other than the Crystal caves. That includes trying to find something to eat. Everything was closed at 2pm except McDonalds (which was flat out being the only thing open besides a petrol station).

Make sure you do Coffee Works at Mareeba! The $20 self-guided tour pays for itself on the free chocolate samples alone. Their coffee museum is well done (not usually my thing) and it was great seeing so many atomic coffee makers in the one spot!

We spent a full day on the Tablelands while staying in Port Douglas and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We visited the Curtain Fig Tree which is well worth a look but without doubt the highlights were Lakes Eacham and Barrine. Lake Eacham in particular was a beautiful spot for a walk - both lakes are ringed by circuit walks (Barrine is 5km and Eacham is 3km) through the rainforest and both walks were thoroughly enjoyable. We were lucky enough to be visiting on a weekday and Lake Eacham was a beautifully quiet spot to have lunch and watch the birds. Small rat kangaroos were also abundant at both lakes and there was plenty of interesting bird life along the walking tracks. We also briefly visited the Millaa Millaa and Malanda Falls. In a day we ran out of time and barely touched the surface - it was quite a long drive from Port Douglas but well worth it although if you are staying in North Queensland and wanting to visit the Tablelands it is more convenient to stay in Cairns.

The road from Cairns to Atherton Tablelands was beautiful. Lovely scenery!
We have visited The Crystal Caves in Atherton and the Coffee Works in Mareeba. Both are worth a visit! Also we did the Falls circuit ending up in Millaa Millaa Falls. Amazing!
