I only had half a day to spare before flying back out of Cairns and this fit the bill beautifully. Lovely (and speedy) catamaran to Green Island, a chance to go for a quick swim in the crystal waters, jumped on a semi-submarine to check out the reef life, and a quick cruise on a glass-bottomed boat. Great value and well worth the effort if you're short on time (departed at 9am, returned at 1pm)

Our family did the day at Green Island in the Spetember School Holidays. The snorkelling was excellent - much better than Fitzroy Island. The fish were bigger and more plentiful, although Nemo and other smaller fish were also spotted. There were lots of colourful fish and coral of all sizes.
The semi-submarine experience is a MUST DO! We spotted 4 turtles, a small shark, a sting ray, many rock cod, a couple of trevally and other large fish. There was hundreds of them.
The reef has regenerated on Green Island and the sand is normal sand rather than coral on Fitzroy Island which makes for a more comfortable experience.
If you only have one day out on the reef then you will love this. If you have the time get the early boat at 9am as there is lots to do in and out of the water.

In the September school holidays my family and i headed from brisbane to Cairns. After checking out all the cruise options we decided to go with Bg Cat, and we are so pleased we did. From the moment we boarded we where made to feel so welcome. I am right into customer service and these guys where 5 star. They couldn't do enough to ensure our day was perfect, it really was the best service i have seen.
The boats are in great condition and where spotlessly clean, the reef Rocket was super smooth and fast. We went on the sub, highly recommended that you do that. The snorkelling was awesome, the best fish life i have seen. The buffet lunch was fantastic with great options, you name it they had it.
This was definitely the highlight of our Cairns holiday. You have to go, you wont be disappointed.

We decided to go to Green Island on our last day in Cairns, we had previously been to the Reef & Fitzroy Island. The snorkelling is not that great compared to The Reef & compared to Fitzroy Island there were just too many people for me. I understand tourism operators need to make money, but after my visit I feel they really need to limit the amount of people who visit the Island all day, every day. The reef just didn't seem healthy and although there are signs everywhere and people are told numerous times, they still stand on the coral & apart from advising people not to, there is no one enforcing this. Green island is also a feeding ground for the Green Sea Turtle, there is a lot of sea grass around the island, and I have to wonder how the Turtles feel having their feeding grounds over taken every day, yes I know they have areas people can't go into, but I doubt the Turtles understand this, after all the Green Sea Turtle is an endangered animal, isn't their feeding ground more important than tourism? If done properly, numbers limited and rules enforced, this could be a good day.

Dear Batchelor Girl 142,

Thankyou for your recent review and post. We do appreciate your comments and also appreciate everyone is entitled to their own individual opinions. As you are concerned with regards to the amount of people that visit the island , I thought I would take this opportunity to let you know there is in fact a limit in place for each company that travels to certain parts of the Great Barrier Reef , Green Island being one of them. Please do take into consideration there are a number of other companies that travel to Green Island each day as well as ourselves , so not all passengers you see there are actually travelling with ourselves, in fact you would probably find our company takes up just a small number of these tourists.

We certainly also appreciate your concerns about passengers standing on the coral and reef itself. This I'm sure you will agree is something we try to make all our passengers aware of at every given opportunity as we also don't want this ruined for future passengers that travel with us. We have a power point display at our check in desk asking passengers to please be mindful of standing on the coral, we have a DVD on the way to Island that also advises the same message and we also give our passengers an activity leaflet in their own preferred language which again also advises of the importance of not standing on coral, this is for their own sake as well as the coral as coral cuts can be nasty.

As a company we do support many organisations that contribute to the upkeep of the reef and also have a keen interest in the sea turtles you mention.

As mentioned we do appreciate your comments but also believe we do help in trying give our passengers a wonderful day by showing them what the Great Barrier Reef and the marine life has to offer whilst also doing our best in trying to preserve the reef and not making an impact on the wonderful marine life we have . As you can see by other posts on this page , we do have many other passengers who have enjoyed the service and the activities we have provided.

Thanks for your comments and regards,

Green Island is situated just over an hour's catamaran trip from Cairns. I would recommend the trip to those who only have a short time in the Cairns area and would still like to experience a snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. The staff is friendly and the service is very efficient. The base fare is $84AUD and that includes snorkel gear or a glass bottom boat ride. Everything else (except tea, coffee & water) is extra.)
The coral and sea life is not as stunning as what is found on any trip to the outer reef but we saw a reasonable variety of fish and a sea turtle. Weather was stunning and the sea was calm. We had a very enjoyable day.
