Owner description: Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am-9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday-9pm Wednesday all year round.

The grounds, the changing rooms and toilets, the lagoon itself, the bbq's, the vibe, the concept, all terrific. A fee free facility perfect for everyone with lagoon depth ranging from virtually a centimetre all the way up to 1.5 m.

A reasonable amount of shade, clean grounds, beautiful facilities, lots of life guards, clean water, honestly I don't think I could pick anything wrong with it. It even attracts some buskers which adds to the festivities. Well done Cairns.

This is a true asset to Cairns - a stunning walk around the lagoon right in the city centre. Blue sky, 30 degrees, MAGIC. Never went swimming but enjoyed people watching and relaxing beside the crystal clear water.

The Esplanade is a fantastic location for many different activities and suitable for all ages to either; swim in the beautiful lagoon, laze on the lush grasses, run on the scenic boardwalk or relax and listen to the live entertainment.

People coming to Cairns in the past expected a Tropical Paradise a sandy beach and waving Palm trees and, of course, they expected to be able to swim in the sea. It came as a disappointment to find none of this available and they were usually horrified by the Cairns mudflats. Now you can stroll across the main Esplanade and walk straight into the wading end of the lagoon which invites you to stay and enjoy a swim. The lagoon is beautifully designed and landscaped, the sheer size of it is impressive and all of Cairns other shortcomings mentioned fade into insignificance.
The esplanade walk makes the mud flats interesting and the grassy areas around the lagoon can accommodate everyone comfortably. Unfortunately there were no coconuts planted as these are considered non native species but there are plenty of trees for shade, toilet facilities and plenty of restaurants on the Esplanade. It has improved Cairns significantly and turned it into a very pleasant place for a short stay.

What a delightful thing to have in the middle of the city! It certainly adds to the holiday atmosphere, even if not swimming yourself. We spent time splashing in the shallows with our 2yo grandson, between the fountains of water that appear at regular intervals. The lagoon is kept beautifully clean, is surrounded by grass and holiday-makers, and has varying depths. Definitely the place to spend time in Cairns.
