Owner description: Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

We were amazed at this vast outdoor swimming pool. It goes to a depth of 1.5m and great to wade in from a natural beach rather than step down conventional swimming pool steps. Its great for a swim and a cool off and its free!

Although the lagoon is lifeguarded, please don't be complacent if you are looking after little ones and keep your eye on them at all times. They can easily walk out of their depth as we witnessed happen to one small child (my husband saved him out of the water!)

I did wonder how many bladders had been emptied in the lagoon, but apparently the lagoon is closed once a week for cleaning/refilling?

It had a great atmosphere and had a band playing while we were there.

It is so lovely to have a free activity available right in town. Clean, asthetic, just what is needed on a steamy day in Cairns

Swim, sunbath, have a BBQ, listen to live music, or kick the ball around - if you want to relax, try the lagoon.

Cairns Lagoon is a man made swimming area with stunning views over Trinity Inlet. With a sandy beach area on one side, this picturesque lagoon meets everyone's needs. Backpackers and visitors flock there during the day, while locals call in for a swim or aquarobics class in the early morning. Surrounded by restaurants and will lots of free bbq's and tables it is a great place to while away a hour or several. Best thing is it all free.
