As check-in was after hours the room key and swipe cards were left in the outside safe which was fine because an email is sent before you arrive explaining all of this but it would be better to have some service past 6pm.! Overall this was just one of my concerns about the "service"... if you wanted to know anything i.e. like the fact that rooms are not serviced daily, where the pool is, how to get internet, then you have to read about it in the information folder in your room (that's if there is a folder in your room!). Also, the manager was frightfully unfriendly - we were almost too scared to speak to her and the girl on the desk was timid and vague. Given this city is a key tourist destination why on earth aren't they remotely happy? In four days I don't think we saw either of them smile and look like they wanted to be where they were (there was also an unfriendly older man walking about the place - I can only guess that he was the husband of the manager but he also couldn't raise a smile or even a "hello")..
First impression of the studio apartments is that you feel like you're walking into a big cupboard and you're literally greeted by a large cupboard when you open the door. After a while you feel like you're a caged animal as the box shaped balcony is enclosed with aluminium blinds and it is hard to imagine you're at a holiday destination and not a prison! These rooms are on the side of the buildings so don't expect any water views so we changed rooms.
The one bedroom apartments are much better and are worth the extra $$$. They have full kitchens which are great given the proximity of the supermarkets. As for the internet - there is only one option...24hrs and it only costs $11 BUT you have to get a cable from reception (between 7 and 6) in order to access it AND go to reception every day for a new password and new allocation - you cannot sign up for an hour and you cannot pay for or receive access for more than one day at a time... very odd.
The location is good as it is an easy walk to the esplanade and many restaurants. The downside is the noise and the lack of service. I suggest packing earplugs because if the street noise doesn't wake you the trains will. Despite my comments I did like staying here but would love to see the staff take some happy pills!
