Anise is a small and funky wine bar bistro in the heart of Brisbane's cool and funky Valley / New Farm precinct. A very small shop front opens onto a long bar at which you sit to nibble, sip, eat and drink.
And the nibbling, eating, sipping and drinking is very, very enjoyable. In truth, the food is a support act for the wine. Anise has a small but varied cellar with some amazing wines I have never seen elsewhere. Wines are stacked behind the bar, under the bar, out the back... everywhere really.
You can buy by the glass or bottle and they offer a a great variety, with plenty of stalwarts but many new and unusual labels. Hard core Australian Shiraz, beautiful New Zealand Pinot, classic French, Italian and emerging new world reds abound. Plenty of whites on offer, bubbles and stickies too. There is something for everyone.
Don't be put off if you don't know your wine. The bar staff are unfailingly helpful and friendly and all have a deep knowledge and expertise in wine. Tell them what you like, or even just what you want to eat, and the team will suggest a variety of options, all of which will be delightful.
The food is modern bistro; good variety, fresh, plenty of meat for the carnivores and vegetables for whoever eats those. Over the years I have been visiting Anise, I have never failed to enjoy the food they have to offer. My only complaint is that they used to have a dish which was fresh dates, wrapped in prosciutto, with a wedge of chevre pushed into the top of the date then all baked in the oven... I could (and have) eaten piles of those things... Anise - bring them back!!!
Tip: If you ask nicely, the bar staff will let you try a sip or two of different wines before you choose glass…
One last thing; Gentlemen, if you visit the facilities, check out the back of the door… lots of rock star signatures.
