Owner description: The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) is a single institution located across two adjacent river-side buildings in the Cultural Precinct at Brisbane's South Bank. QAGOMA holds a collection of historical, modern and contemporary art, and stages a dynamic program of Australian and international exhibitions. We are home to the Children's Art Centre which collaborates on interactive artworks with leading artists from around the world, and the Australian Cinematheque, the only dedicated cinema facility in an Australian art museum. QAGOMA operates its own retail outlets and cafes and restaurants, proceeds from which support the Gallery.

This is a large gallery in a beautiful modern building. Some of the works are breath taking (huge silver snake skeleton rising to the ceiling resting on a man made lake), some quirky (videos of flies juxtaposed with passports), some totally perplexing. The gallery is worth an hour and has the added feature of a very good cafe in the adjacent sculpture garden. Spinach salad with feta and pumpkin....yummy! Quality Oz wines as an accompaniment. Excellent desserts.

I went and saw the Prado exhibit and must compliment the museum staff on the organisation of the display, the ambiance in the cafe with tapas and flamenco music and the ease with which it all managed to come together. From the first time I visited upon moving to Brissy and caught Surrealism to this exhibit, I have found the presentation top notch! Well done and I'm certain to visit again.

Not really a fan of modern art so I was reluctant to go. Pleasantly surprised at the installations and displays. I still don't understand it but really enjoyed it. Had a drink and a bite to eat at one of the cafes there, a bit expensive, but a great view of the river.

We visited GoMA in August 2012 to view the Indigenous Exhibition. Unfortunately, we did not have sufficient time to view more exhibitions and we found the Indigenous exhibition disappointing. With so many wonderful artists, we found the displayed choices curious and some of the works of art little more than what you might expect from a preschool drawing! (By comparison we visited an indigenous Art Gallery in the City Mall and the works were OUTSTANDING) Mind you we are not experts nor trained art critics and don't pretend to be.
However ,the building itself is sensational and provides a wonderful backdrop on the banks of Southbank. The GoMA building is part of the whole arts precinct and should be on the list of must doos whilst in Brisbane. Its clean, open and modern lines, attention to detail, numerous volunteers and extensive facilities (wheelchair access, restrooms, galleries, etc) provided an enjoyable visit. The sculptures we viewed on our way to the exhibition were inspiring - loved the baby grand piano sculpture! Wish we had more time to explore-would probably have rated higher. :(
