We arrived after a 36-hour journey from the UK to find the flat very welcoming - we were able to get in even when arriving in the middle of the night, and found it in great condition and with some provisions in the fridge for our breakfast - including eggs from their own chickens!
The flat is small though doesn't feel tiny - there's one main (bed)room, the kitchen area is a surprisingly decent size (we were easily able to cook ourselves some meals), and is slightly partitioned off from the bed area, and the bathroom is big enough for a good shower, and again slightly set away from the bedroom with a little pantry area. It's effectively a one-room flat, but feels as if it's sort of got three rooms.
There's also the balcony area which has a good (and not very overlooked) view across the hill to the houses beyond - a good view for a city suburb. And you can chat to the chickens while you're there. The garden has a fair bit of vegetation although the balcony appeared to be bug-free and comfortable even though it was the season for windy rain when we were there.
The house was great at keeping the temperature cool in the hot climate (presumably this is why they design houses in this traditional "queenslander" style - it seemed to work!) - despite the temperatures being in the high 20s when we were there, because the windows all open (with bug-protection gratings) and shaded from the direct sunlight, with airflow designed to be all around the building, we didn't even need to turn on the air-con (unlike the other properties we stayed in in Brisbane, which felt a fair bit warmer).
The couple that own the property were great to deal with - quick to respond on e-mail and although they were away for much of the weekend we were there, they provided contact details for where there were going to be, and made it clear that they'd be happy to curtail what they were doing and come back to us if we were in need of them - top service!
The price isn't that high because the flat is quite small, but what you lose in space, you gain in quality and service - it's a lovely flat and we could have stayed there comfortably for longer than the three nights we did.
The location is in Red Hill suburb of Brisbane, pretty close to the start of the M3 that takes you down to Gold Coast, and close to Brisbane - you could possibly walk it, but it's probably a bit far for that, and we got the bus (bus stop right opposite the house, bus ran every 20mins approx during the day, bus stop has display board with expected bus times) which was about $12 return (two $6 singles since they don't do returns) but would have been nearly half that if we'd got a Go Card, which we'd have done if we'd used the bus more. Bus service was good and quick right into the middle of Brisbane.
There was plenty of parking on the side-road outside, but since it wasn't covered, the car can get a bit hot. For a flat so small, expecting a garage would have been a bit unreasonable though! It was good enough that we could park for free on the road.
Because it's a city, driving around can be a bit confusing, particularly when trying to navigate the busy roads around the M3 and the river. It would have been helpful if the flat had contained a road map of the wider brisbane area since we didn't have satnav (nor smartphones - I can't remember if the property had WiFi because we didn't have the equipment to use it anyway!), but not something we necessarily expect - and they did provide a map of the local suburb complete with markings for where all the local shops and eateries were, which was very helpful. Only other downside was that the directions for getting there were a bit unclear at first (only a tiny bit!), so make sure you check you know where you're going.
Overall we had a good fea days here, it was the best of the places we stayed while on holiday this year, and we would definitely recommend this.
