Owner description: Old Government House, the home of Queensland's governors between 1862 and 1910, is Queensland's most important heritage building. After undergoing a major restoration, the house has re-opened as an historic house museum and gallery housing the works of renowned Australian artist William Robinson. An extensive education program, including guided tours, podcasts and interpretive displays, offers fascinating insights into the house and its role in the early history of Brisbane and Queensland.

“Fasinating glimpse into past life”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

This building in the midst of Brisbane city's botantic gardens really captivated me. The video in the foyer was particularly well prepared & offered interesting insights to life in the House from past generations - esp regarding servant/master relationships. The house itself is beautifully restored, and while they could have thrown in many 'randomly collected relics' from past (as many old houses do) they have instead decided to leave most rooms empty of old clutter. (It is still used for private fundtions, etc.) Upstairs is a quirky permanent display of farm-scene artworks - fun for young & old alike. All for free! I must have spent nearly 2 hours browsing and also checking out the 'interactive online tour'. It was actually a highlight of my trip to Brisbane. There's a decent-looking cafe on site as well.

“Literally an empty house”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

I had long intended to visit Old Government House in the City Botanic Gardens and my first impressions were favourable. In the entry foyer there is a series of excellent and insightful displays explaining the history of the house, the role of the Queensland Governor and the Governors who occupied the house which I found fascinating and made me eager to explore the rest of the property but my heart quickly sank upon entering the next room. With the exception of the foyer, the library (which now houses a period bookcase, desk and chairs similar to those used by the Governors for their Council meetings) the house is entirely devoid of ANY features! There is a piano in the hall but apart from that there is NOTHING AT ALL to see from when the house was a vice-regal residence. The upper floor is an art gallery of works by William Robinson (who the promotional literature says was a "distinguished" Australian artist but I suspect like me, no one has ever heard of him) which aren't very good. There was an impressive souvenir selection available for purchase but overall I would say that this attraction can be skipped without any regrets by other visitors.
