“A last resort stay at the SOHO Brisbane (Wickham Terrace)”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

Both a friend and I stayed at the SOHO for the second game of State of Origin...

Plus - Able to check in early at 11am instead of 2pm
- Kind enough to upgrade us to a double and single bed room so we didn't have to share
- Our train didn't leave till 1655 and check out was early so they let us store our bags..
- Cleaning staff were friendly and room was presented nicely for the price

Negatives

- Considering this was the only hotel left out of 15+ we tried to stay at...the SOHO was close to public transport for the game and Queen St Mall (free Spring Hill loop bus out the front)... But we were still left paying an expensive price for an average hotel

- We booked through Flight Centre who forgot to tell us we had to give a $200 room deposit upon arrival for incidental payments which doesn't happen in all hotels.. explaining this misunderstanding to the reception staff was difficult and because I didn't have a MasterCard, Visa or direct debit card I had to walk 3 doors down to the BPH to get cash out.. The receptionist was quite rude in the way she referred to Flight Centre consultants here in Bundaberg and there ability to book hotels and apartments and give correct information to customers..

- Upon arriving in our room (113) it was quite cool so we decided to turn the air conditioner on which subsequently made a rather loud start up sound as it was in a poor state of repair..

- The heater was reverse circle and we had it running from 11am-4pm and it was still cold.. so we rang room service for 2 more blankets.. and were asked quite rudely had we turned the air-conditioning to heating and I said yes... and had we closed the balcony door yes.. finally they agreed to reluctantly bring us up 2 more blankets...

- Not that its our issue on a workplace level but I felt it was ours on a customer level considering the young lady was cleaning our room.. the receptionist again spoke quite rudely - this time toward her cleaning staff ringing her insisting she stop all she was doing and the room be vacuumed stat!

- Traffic noise didn't worry me because I live on a main road at home

- Security: Both my friend and I were reluctant to walk in the dark or through the Roma St Parklands even during day light.. so we caught public transport both buses and trains safely and were approached by a lovely british uni student who saw we were lost at Roma St trying to get to the stadium.. she was kind enough to walk us directly to the stadium through the parklands and busy streets!

Overall we had a great time at the game and at the shops, however we would prefer to stay else where next year if we go again :)

Room Tip: Book your hotels and apartments early to avoid disappointment... Wotif.com and Flight Centre can hel...

We stayed recently at the SOHO and had friendly staff and nice decor in the rooms. They were quite small and the bathroom was a little old, but for the price and convenience of being so close to town it was good value for money. I would recommend this venue if you are just sleeping (i.e. going somewhere in the evening). The free Wifi and car parking was good, as long as you got a parking spot.

The Soho Motel is great value and location for a stop over. We stayed there for a night on our way to Vanuatu. What it might lack in a few amenities (lift, 24 hour reception), it makes up for in location, convenience, service friendliness, cleanliness, and value.

It is reasonably priced and very convenient for public transport, being a 15 minute walk from Roma Street Station. This will get you pretty much anywhere on the rail network in Brisbane, including to and from the domestic and international airport terminals on the AirTrain.

It is an uphill walk so if you are not very mobile and can't tackle hill walks then it may not be for you (we're in our mid 50s and not particularly fit but managed it comfortably with our cabin bags and luggage). However, the walk back to the station is downhill and very enjoyable around the Roma Street parklands.

The hotel is more in the way of a sort of boutique hotel than a motel. There is no lift so if you are not capable of carrying your bags upstairs then either ask for a room on the ground floor (these are the 200 series rooms) or find a hotel with a lift.

The service was fantastic, informative, and helpful, and it has a small business centre to help with online check-ins to print out boarding passes (for a cheap fee) or just to catch up electronically if you don't carry your own. The reception and business centre are not 24 hour service, but we didn't find this at all a negative.

We stayed in Room 304 on second floor which had a small bit of noise from the road but nothing out of the ordinary for travellers who stay in big cities (which is why they invented earplugs!). The rooms towards the back of the hotel are quieter than towards the front because of the traffic lights just up the road. These rooms are numbered *05 and up.

The room we had was not on the large side, but was okay for 2 people with two luggage cases and cabin bags. It was very clean and tidy, and the bathroom ensuite likewise. There was no room safe, however, this simply meant we took the stuff we'd normally put in a safe with us. The room and ensuite size wouldn't suit travellers with a house load of luggage, or that can't sleep in anything less than a suite.

Overall a quirky and lovable hotel in a very convenient location. We would highly recommend it to those who don't find any of the above comments off-putting, and will definitely be staying there again in our stopovers in Brisbane.

Room Tip: The rooms towards the back of the hotel are quieter than towards the front because of the traffic li...

The service here was great, very efficient!

Yes, as other reviewers have said, the rooms are quite small but there was plenty of storage for what I needed and as I was only there for one night, I really just wanted a place to sleep.

Clean bathroom and comfortable bed are my two main things when staying somewhere and the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spotless so I was really happy.

There was free WIFI available but I forgot to ask for the password so couldn't use it, again, didn't really matter as I was only there for a short time.

The only thing I would mention is that there are no lifts, stairs only. Fine for me but it would be difficult if people with limited mobility or lots of baggage were looking to stay.

I left my bathroom window open because there was an excellent musician playing at the place next door (free concert for me!) but closing the window easily blocked out the sound for people who wanted to sleep without the music.

Very cheap and good value for money, I'd stay here again and have recommended it to family and friends who are looking for a quick overnighter.

Our stay at the Soho Motel was a delight, starting with the hilarious, multi-tasking, knows everything Ming at the reception desk and extending through the exquisite Roma Gardens across the street to the easy walk to Brisbane's CBD.

Tiny hotel. Great service. Super location!

Having read other reviews about the Soho went with an open mind - the welcome was very efficient as was the check in - the a little small but seeing as it is only for sleeping it was fine - very clean and has everything you need only let down is the aircon it needs updating as very noisy. Would stay again as convenient to the city. Thank you to the staff.

Pro's: Cheap compared to other Brisbane hotels, clean, free WIFI, location, friendly staff.
Con's: No elevator, tiny rooms, very basic bathroom.

Quite a steep hill between Roma Street Station and Hotel.
Would I stay here again, probably not.

Room Tip: No elevator so beware if you have heavy luggage for higher floors.
