This hostel is the one that unfortunately will remain in my mind for being the most disgusting and unhelpful hostel of them all whilst we travelled up the east coast. I booked a room for a night via internet and then booked a separate room for two nights via phone because the website crashed during the process. When phoning i asked that we be placed in a room in the new part as i had read on here that the rooms in the old part were none too nice (thats an understatement). When we arrived they had no recollection of our phone call and only the room i booked via internet which to my horror was in the old part. We complained and said we had requested the new bit but as this room was not booked over the phone and we hadn't written it in an email they didn't know and had no new rooms left. To top it off they told us that there weren't any new rooms which wasn't true because on further inspection we found the new rooms and they were really nice. We stayed in the old room for one night and then managed to move to a slightly better room for the next two nights which although was not in the new part it had been re-decorated. I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone until the refurbishment of all the rooms is complete because the room we stayed in i believe was uninhabitable for humans. It really did spoil my time in Brisbane which is a lovely city, it was just such a shame that we had to go back to that place at the end of the day. I strongly recommend Tin billy which is brilliant!

We generally had no problems with the YHA and YHA affiliated hostels during our trip up the east coast, however I do have to say I was disapointed when we arrived at our building site hostel in Brisbane!
We booked using the YHA handbook, and contacted the hostel direct, so we were unaware that the hostel in undergoing major, and much needed renovations.
I am sorry to have to say that the staff were quite uninterested and unfriendly, (not common for YHA hostels I do have to point out). Rooms were small and uninviting, and the bathrooms were an absolute nightmare, the worst case of mould in the showers and on the shower curtains, I was afraid to touch anything, and I am well used to roughing it!
Overall experience was not good, considering there is so much competition for this hostel, as there are many alternatives for travellers like myself in Brisbane.
I feel that although they are doing their best to renovate this hostel, they have a long way to go and I would reccommend that until the work is complete, you should shop around before booking here.

The hostel is being refurbished at the moment, and not before time. Overall, it is looking tatty. However, my double room in the newer section of the hostel is immaculate, airconditioned, and is the nicest room I've stayed in a hostel. I basically think your experience will depend on what room you get. If you can, I'd try to stay in the more modern (front part) of the hostel. Hopefully, once refurbishments are completed, the whole hostel will be nice.

Because of the refurbishments, at the moment it can be a bit noisy during the day, but the noise doesn't start before 9.

The bathroom I have used is modern and clean.

Currently, there is slightly too little room in the kitchen, and in communal areas. There are two areas for watching the television, and a small laundry.

I think it's a case of watch this space. The refurbishments will hopefully fully modernise the back annexe part of the hostel, in order that everyone can experience the same standard of accommodation.

Well things must have gone downhill terribly since the other reviews as I thought this hostel was the most revolting one I stayed in during my travels down the east coast.
The funky reception area gave no clues as to what was awaiting me in the dorm. There were 5 beds crammed into a dirty, dark and totally airless room. Very shabby and no way of covering the windows.
The shower and toilet facilities were the worst though. Make sure you wear your flip flops in there and make it as short a visit as possible.
To sum up then: Ugh!
Better to stay at Tinbilly's - v clean and surprisingly quiet.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Clean, well looked after hotsel in a great location, only a short walk into the city centre. We stayed in both the new and old section of the building, and both were fine. On site cafe sells really nice food at cheap prices!
