“Out of the hoi-polloi, staff brilliant, yet close to everything”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

I cannot say enough of the courtesy & helpfulness of the staff. LOVED the hotel - this suits the traveller who prefers older style (reminded me somewhat of a small-sister version of the Windsor in Melbourne). The Rothbury is in a heritage building, as I understand, once the Shell building and convenient to Central Station, the lovely Edward Street, Riverside dining & Queen Street. The room was spotless and I slept like a baby. I really loved the little brekky left in the 'fridge - juice, bread for toasting, part of the deal which suits those who prefer a light breakfast, and I thought a lovely, home- touch. The room was quiet, and excellent value for such closeness to all amenities. I travelled by myself and had a small room (which was large compared to those of our English cousins) and would have preferred to have had a window that opened, as I understand some of the other rooms have, but still no great bother, although as usual, and as previous reviews will attest, I had a row with the air-conditioner (last tally: me nil: aircon 1) but my fault as am hopeless with air-cons. Will most certainly return.

Room Tip: If you prefer not to be hermetically sealed, ask for a room with a window.

Friendly, helpful, welcoming staff. Well appointed and conveniently located. Secure underground parking. Doubled glazed windows reduced traffic noise. Units well set up and fully equipped for an extended stay if required. Short walk to "air train" for access to Brisbane international airport.

Room Tip: No preference

We flew to Brisbane for a big sporting event and rented a one bedroom apartment at the Rothbury for three nights, our first stay there. It was a great choice. It is just out of the busy city centre, so relatively quiet (no rowdy sports fans to be heard), but only a short block from the Central Railway station, so we caught the train from and to the airport.
The hotel is very 1930s, beautifully refurbished. Our apartment was light and airy and very comfortable, nice appointments and appliances, and new bathroom (with washing machine/dryer). Continental breakfast of juice, cereal, bread and condiments was placed fresh in our refridgerator each day, for use with the tea, coffee, kettle and toaster provided. There are good restaurants only a couple of blocks away, and a cafe/bar next door to the hotel.
We thought it was great, and will go back next time we travel to Brisbane.

I cannot say enough about the Rothbury. it is central to everything, public transport outside your door, short walk to Queen Street Mall, everything is in walking distance and was reasonably priced. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and very clean, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. We heard no noise for the duration of out stay, which was surprising for me being in the heart of the city and with other guests coming and going. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment, and the kitchen and washer/dryer were a god send, and the breakfast basket we found in the fridge each day was great for the mornings. Now we don't stay anywhere else, and recommend it to everyone we know, the Rothbury ticks all the boxes, give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Stayed here to attend a conference around the corner. Accommodation in the city was at a premium because of two major sporting events in the city that week. Location cannot be faulted; very close to central/AirTrain access. Rooms are quite well appointed with a kitchenette, washer/drier etc. Lovely antique touches in the lobby and the heritage lifts are a sight to behold. Cleaning staff polite, cheerful and helpful when they met you in the halls or lifts.
Arrived and reception was closed. Rang for service, explained who I was and that booking was made in the name of my colleague, who was arriving later. I cheerfully handed over credit card for imprint, even though colleague would be finalising bill. All was very chatty and pleasant as this was explained.
Then my colleague arrived, and was also asked for a pre-authorisation. This was actually a pre-authorisation PLUS a $100 bond, which was never mentioned in either case. When my collegue queried why they needed both our cards, the receptionist lied and told that she thought I was my colleague! Upshot is that they had $2080 authorisation for A $940 room. After a 4 night stay and now having returned home, the money still hasn't been returned to my card.
There were other, smaller oddities. The sofa bed wasn't made up, and although they were prompt to come up to make the bed, I was then asked did I want a roll out bed instead (even though it was clear to me it wouldn't fit without blocking the entrance to the bedroom and ensuite, and we'd booked and paid for a sofa bed, and she was standing there looking at the sofa bed with sheets in her arms). Trying to get wifi was like being in a Monty Python skit. I never did manage it; after finally managing to convince someone to share the password, I was prompted to choose a package for which there were no published prices. Using the combined washer/dryer was another adventure. Printing instructions and sticking them above the machine is the right idea, but they clearly weren't for that model (instructions involved using six buttons on left and three dials on right. There were eight buttons on the left and one dial on the right, so in the end it was a case of guessing symbols and hoping for the best). Toilet often wouldn't stop flushing throughout stay, then sprung a leak. When we reported it we were asked if we were sure it was leaking (yes, pretty sure, actually), then the solution was to arrive with an armload of towels and an apology as apparently there aren't any 24 hr plumbers to be found in metropolitan Brisbane.
Ceiling above shower is badly water damaged, which was quite a bizarre contrast to the luxurious marble bench top and enormous sink.
My colleague was told that luggage storage involved leaving her stuff in the corridor and they'd keep an eye on it. She opted to go to the airport early instead.
This place could be fabulous, with a bit of consistency. If you're a fan of Fawlty Towers, you'll love it.

I was a bit dubious based on reviews, BUT, was very pleasantly surprised. Very dated decor but seems new. Very clean, very quiet, huge space, we had room 103. Bed very comfortable, shower decent. 2 mins from central, walk to queen st, Brunswick, river etc. would recommend and stay again. Value for money. Breakfast very basic but doesn't matter.

Good heritage hotel very conveniently located one block from Central Station (save money by taking the train from the airport instead of the taxi). Rooms were quiet and comfortable, and the light breakfast in the refrigerator was a nice touch. The in room washing machine/dryer was also a nice bonus.

Only downside ... the lifts.

Room Tip: Reception is not staffed 24/7 make sure you have made arrangements for a late check in.
