The week between Christmas and New Year is, as we have found over many years in the country, not a good time to be looking for good restaurants in Australia as they tend to close and go off on summer holidays. On this New Year's Eve we struck lucky with Reserve Restaurant Milton after trawling through Tripadvisor for the city and finding that one place after another was closed.
We enjoyed the 30 minute walk along the north bank river walkway which also boasts a superb cycle way.
So we were ready for lunch and we were not disappointed. The welcome was warm and the service from the two front of house staff friendly, attentive and informative (especially the sommelier on the wonderful wines on their comprehensive list though, judging by the time it took for my martini to materialise, I think I taxed him on that).
The chef did not let us down either. Our food was superb: a real joy.
Lunch was quiet that day for them even though they were probably the only fine restaurant open at that time in the city. I suppose everyone was saving themselves for that evening and certainly Reserve expected to be full at midnight that night even though they expected minimal views of the fireworks and that suggests to me that there are many others in the city who rate Reserve as highly as we do.

Superior food, ingenious menu and the wonderful service has given us many memorable nights. We loved so much we even held a 30 people birthday celebrated here. The staff was great. Highly recommended.

We thought we would treat ourselves to something special for our last night in Brisbane. We were not disappointed. This restaurant is fantastic and only a short walk from the CBD. A relaxed atmosphere where everyone is made to feel very special. An exceptional wine list to go with every course. Not cheap, but here you certainly get money's worth. A memorable night and a place we will put high on our list the next time we come to Brisbane. If you have the time, it's definitely one not to miss.

We search Brisbane for a restaurant that was not closed on the last day of the year and booked in here.
We did do well!
We were able to walk here from our hotel via the fantastic river track/cycleway.
Stephen Heffernan & Kiernan Reekie have this attractive end victorian terrace building.
Actually I thought it needs a good scrub up. The window wall of the restaurant has not had a wash for ages. The gents toilet needs a scrub too. If the table tops had been linen covered and the walls decorated a bit the room would look less like a cafe.
Now the GOOD BIT.
Service was excellent from Sarah and one other, even though we declined the bargain lunch menu and went Ala carte.
We ate,Scallops,63degEgg,Half duck,Barramundi, cheese plate,Choc tart, and drank glas after glass.
This was one of the best meals we have ever eaten in Australia and despite an all night vigil coming up that night chef never made a mistake.
We spent $160 on great food and $153 on drinks from one of the best wine lists I can remember.
Deservedly Brisbanes No.1 restaurant.
