“Lacks soul & is very sterile”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

We thought we would try out the Meriton whilst staying in Brisbane overnight.
The hotel is very sterile & unfortunately lacks character and comfort. If feels like the developers just wanted to get it completed quickly and have not really put thought into the the finishing touches. It feels & looks cheap as a result.

Although the finishes are brand new - the cleaners need to pay attention to the public use areas for scuff marks on walls, floors and windows which were all dirty.

The Meriton definitely need some plants, artwork or more furniture to soften up the clinical feel of the place. Minimalism is good - but the finishes need to be of a higher quality to pull it off successfully - Meriton misses the mark here.

The pool area, whilst clean, is so uninviting. It desperately needs furniture like pool loungers or chairs, plants, available towels and air conditioning.....it is so incredibly hot & stuffy in there.

The rooms are nice, but the TV is annoying (Staff - please remove the austar channels that have no coverage & ensure that the remotes work correctly). The sofa in the lounge area is so hard and uncomfortable.

Meriton is a good base for walking into the CBD - just don't plan on relaxing in your apartment - we couldn't wait to get out of there - its a good spot for a bed for the night (the bed was very comfortable) with a great view - but otherwise I felt very claustrophobic.

The car park requires some signage it is a rabbit warren.

Our stay suited our purposes of a bed for the night - but it wasn't a memorable experience and we won't be staying again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room up high facing the Story Bridge.

We booked at Meriton purely on price and we certainly were not disappointed! We only paid $135 per night for a brand new, one bedroom apartment with full kitchen and laundry (we didn't use it but would if we stayed longer), access to pool (indoor, heated), spa (warm and clean) and gym (very well equipped and spacious), close to Fortitude Valley and the City (restaurants, movies,etc)...the list goes on! The area is very funky and has a 'Melbourne' feel to it.

We were warned that there might be a little construction noise, but it was negligible, although that was mostly due to excellent noise cancelling windows. My favourite thing about the room...The air-conditioners, necessary due to the 'city noise' even from the 17th floor, were SILENT! The views were outstanding from the floor to ceiling windows, the finishes were beautiful, the bed was so comfortable. The pillows are very soft but high profile, so if you are a tummy sleeper - bring your own. I would definately stay there again. The only slight downside was the 'water-saving shower head'. It was dreadful and not suitable for washing your hair but it did successfully spray everything else in the room! Parking was $20 extra a night, which is pretty standard for Brisbane.

Room Tip: The higher you go the better the view but choose a southern room (view towards the bridge) to avoid...

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment shortly after the hotel opened. There is not much to recommend this hotel. In fairness it is probably a case of opening before they were ready but on the other hand no excuse for poor service and rude staff.

The carpark was more like a construction area and very difficult to navigate. When checking in just before 7pm we were told the reception had closed and were made to feel that we were more of an inconvenience than a welcomed guest. WE were told they could not accept payment and would put this through our credit card the following morning. On returning to our room we were unable to access as the key cards did not work. There was no apology from the reception staff. On entering our room we found a letter advising us to come and pay (which we believed had been automatically taken as per our authorisation). On returning to reception we were told it was not posible to accept payment then and we would have to come back in 30 minutes.

A further issue was having no hot water for 1.5 days of our 2 day stay. Although we understand that issues can occur that are sometimes out of the control of the hotel we cannot understand that nothing was done to address this nor did staff seem to care.

We received a request from the hotel to provide feedback on our stay and advised them of the issues and lack of response from their staff. This was 2 weeks ago and we have still not received a response.

Although the rate of $135 per night was good for a CBD hotel stay I would definitely not stay again as I found the hotel very sterile and staff extremely unwelcoming.

This was our first stay here and the apartments had only been opened 2 days prior so still a lot of work was going on they are still completing floors 40 to 72 which will give a fantastic view, the lower floors look onto other buildings but you are in a city and the prices are great for the accommodation. Its hard to be hard on anything due to the newness of the property, I would like to say it is a little difficult to find your park at the apartments and as with Brisbane you can not just turn around, so if you are going turn off at Morrisey street not Boundary street and then into second street on the left and then park in the second car park. I know right a little confusing but not if you know. Knowledge is Power! Also they can not get taxi's to the apartments it is a 5 min walk to a taxi stand.

Room Tip: When the construction is finished push for the top floors you would get a great view from the top!
