My wife and I were wandering down Little Stanley Street on South Bank in Brisbane on a Thursday night looking for the right restaurant when we heard some fantastic classical piano music. It came from the Obsession Chinese Restaurant, so we ate there.
The young guy playing the piano was Jayce McNeill, a third year Queensland Conservatorium, student who studies classical piano under Natasha Vlassenko.
And he could play complete sonatas and nocturnes by memory. We were very impressed. So apparently are the restaurant owners for Jayce has been playing there for two years.
Funny thing was the last time we in that restaurant was two years ago and he was impressive even then.
There are set tables inside and plenty of al-fresco room too. W e sat at a table for two inside and found the atmosphere very pleasant. The staff were helpful and the service excellent.
The restaurant has an extensive menu in many different oriental styles.
I went for Peking Style Black Pepper Chicken Wok style chicken with black pepper and lemon grass, served with crisped green leaves and fresh lime. It was beautifully cooked and came as big plateful.
My wife chose Mee Goreng Traditional Malaysian stir-fried noodles with potato, egg, chicken, prawn, peas, tomato, and chilli. Again it was a big plateful and, my wife informed me, tasted delicious.
Add to that two glasses of a reasonable chardonnay and the total cost came to $72, which I considered to be quite reasonable considering the quality of the food and the entertainment.
Even the recorded music that was played when the young piano player had left was good too - lots of really cool jazz.
If you go there give Jayce some applause because he really appreciates it. He is there Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings.
