I have been going to the restaurant since i was 15 and is now my favourite place to dine for special times as i don't live near it any more. we always have the tepanyaki and go to the other side for deep fried ice-cream for desert. over the years we have taken work clinits ,family and friends here and all have returned as the food is so good. it is on the expensive side but last time we went with 2 other couples and all up was appox $360 all food and drinks for everyone (of which there was a few). the older lady who runs the restaurant seems to be the same one as years ago and she recognises me each time we go. love to go there.

The food was terrible (Teppan Yaki) the chicken $28.50 was just part of a chicken breast cooked with a tiny amount of oil on the Hot Plate and a bit of Japanese Soy Sauce, nothing else, was tasteless and plain! They gave us the Rice (2 tlbsp's) before the Chicken even started cooking, so was dead cold by the time it was cooked. And the veg's were a bit of finely cut cabbage and bean sprouts. There was no flicking of the food or untencils, he just cut it, no show at all for the cost of it! We went out for my Hisband's b'day with our kids and it was very disappointing, my 9 yr old could have cooked better food. And we were still hungry after, expensive and boring. We were in and out within 30 mins.

Little Tokyo is tucked away on Bowen St and is a pretty good find. There's ample street parking and the restaurant is on the large size, divided into three sections - a bar, teppanyaki and formal/traditional. In the traditional section, you are seated on wooden floors and it caters for meals such as shabu shabu, sukiyaki and other Japanese cuisine (e.g. teriyaki). We were unsure what type of Japanese style we were after, but the sukiyaki and teriyaki options seemed over-priced so we dined in the Teppanyaki section.

The Agedashi Tofu entree was great, in a light crisp batter with a sauce that didn't overpower the main element of the dish. We shared Rib-eye steak and scallop teppanyaki options, whereby a chef cooked them at our table. Both options came with miso soup, rice and stir-fried vegetabls, with extra rice provided without additional cost. Having a bar section resulted in a good range of Japanese beers.

Overall, good food and hospitality but may be a little pricey for what you get.

We ate here with another couple last saturday night. We had tried to get a reservation on a couple of previous occasions but they were always booked out.

Our entrees were to die for (bbq calarmi, fired fish, sashimi plate). And our mains were enjoyable (Japanese soup pot in middle of table and we all cooked our own - good but would order something different next time).

Service was great, we had a lovely older Japanese woman checking on us and our waiter through out the evening. Nice Saki. Enjoyable deserts.

Will be going back again soon, just for the entrees!

For some reason my kids absolutely love this place so we tend to end up here on birthdays. My wife went here when she was a little girl - it seems to be an authentic Japanese design although I have never been to Japan so I can't say that for sure. It has been run all these years by the original owner and her family, and is split into a tepanyaki restaurant on one side and sukiyaki (ie a la carte) on the other.

We always go to the sukiyaki side, which over the last couple of years seems to have had declining patronage while the tepanyaki remains popular. I think one reason is that while the entrees are clean and fresh dishes such as sushi or sashimi which are very well done, the mains are mostly variations on deep fried dishes. This is the wrong way around for modern tastes - it should be the entrees that are small quantities of fried items, and the mains that are raw and fresh ingredients.

There has also been for some years a distinctly musty smell in the sukiyaki room, although the area otherwise appears to be clean and well maintained. The fusty odor is most probably sourced from the ancient ventilation system, or maybe even the original carpet, but is a bit off-putting.

This is an authentic Japanese restaurant run by a real Japanese family, and featuring Japanese waiters (when they can get them). The owners are delightful, the non-fried food beautiful, and we will keep going back - I just wish they would give both the sukiyaki room and the menu a makeover.
