“Disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013

In April this year I booked into the Ibis Budget Brisbane Aiport for four nights. I read the reviews and knew what to expect. On the plus side, the room was clean, the bed was made up everyday and clean towels were put out for us everyday. BUT I booked my husband and myself to have breakfast there everyday. When we arrived at the Hotel we were informed that they werent doing breakfasts at that time because they were doing a refurb in the breakfast area. I had already paid for breakfast when I made the hotel booking. They said they will refund the money which they did by eftpos, which didnt go back into our account until the day we left, so we had to pay out again for breakfast on all four days, which was an added expense which we hadn't budgeted for. They had plenty of time to let us know about the refurb and organise a refund before we arrived. Not good communication. They also provided complimentary tea and coffee. Because of the breakfast area being out of action this was put into the guest laundry, BUT it was only available between the hours of 7am and 10pm, so if you arrived late or left early there was no hot drinks available. There were vending machines for water, cold drinks and food. This hotel was below budget, even the cheapest motels had tea making facilities in the rooms. I think they cut back too much. Breakfast will be available the first week of September. One other thing we had a downstairs room near the stairwell, but it was fairly quiet most of the time, it wasnt as noisy as I thought it would have been, so that is a plus.

Beware of this hotel! Budget...more like a hospital room in a third world country. After a late flight with 3 young children and 2 adults and booking a 'family room' we had bunks (UNMADE) and a double bed and NO bed for our other child! NO lift...don't take suitcases and NO tea/coffee or water facilities only out of the toilet. NOT sound proof and terrible road traffic noise. Was the WORSE hotel I have ever stayed at. I mean when do you ever have to expect to make beds up??? Tried to discuss this with the Hotel but they wouldn't have any bar of it. Apparently we have to make the beds as the staff don't want to stand on the bed??? Well how were we meant to make them??? Checked out at 4.30 am as the room was so tiny, noisy and actually we were going to lose our minds. So please think twice before thinking of the dollar you might save...it was TERRIBLE and ruined the start of our holiday :(

Room Tip: Don't stay here FULL STOP!

Let me make one thing clear, I’m not giving this place 4 stars because it is a 4 star hotel, that is not the case. I am giving it 4 stars because I was happy with it.

We were only expecting to spend a night in the hotel, getting in around 8pm before flying out of the country early the next morning, so we only really needed a bed. As it was, our flight into Brisbane was delayed so we didn’t get to the hotel until 3am anyways. So we had all of around 4 hours in the hotel.

However, the bed was very comfortable, with good clean bedding. The room was tiny, as expected, but the bathroom was very clean. The air-conditioning worked which was definitely a blessing.

There were only two things which detracted from this place overall. One was the fact that the shower spilled out onto the bathroom in general, so you couldn’t really have your towel in there without it getting wet, as well as water going all over the toilet. But that wasn’t really a problem for us, we took it in stride.

The other thing, was the fact that there was no elevator, or if there was, we couldn’t find it. This wouldn’t normally be a problem, but being on the top floor (3rd floor) with two heavy suitcases at 3 in the morning, it would have been nice to have one.

Plus we made a hell of a racket lugging them up the stairs, and back down again early in the morning.

All up though, was very happy and would certainly stay there again for a short night stop-over. Probably wouldn’t use them for any more than a night though, unless you were planning on spending minimal time in the hotel.

Room Tip: If possible, get a room on the bottom floor...

I am familiar with the Ibis brand, but, I was very surprised with this hotel. I recognize what budget can mean, but in this case, Budget means tiny, cramped rooms, a bathroom that is also a shower stall, one bar of hotel soap, and one plastic chair. My wife thought that some jail cells might be bigger than this room.

The rooms were subject to noise from the lobby and hallways, as people were checking in through the night.

Another bad situation was the lack of a restaurant within walking distance. This means another added cost to get a taxi to and from the hotel.

A plus is the wifi is free (though it is at a reduced speed). We used it to try and find a restaurant near the hotel, but there was none to be found.

In all seriousness, I would suggest that if you can, schedule your flight out of Brisbane, at the end of the day, to avoid the inconvenience and extra expense for the hotel, shuttle, taxi and dinner, We took a morning flight and it cost us almost an extra 200 AUD for the hotel and costs. Save your money, and if possible, try and find a better hotel. For what is charged, it is just too expensive for what you get.
