“Stay elsewhere!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2009

We stayed here for 3 nights in August. When I checked in they tried to charge a higher rate than what I had booked at. We had a private room with a TV and small fridge. The room could have used some vacuuming and the window was stuck open. There was a group of backpackers staying there long term who didn't seem to care how loud or dirty they were. One night we returned to find the toilets filthy and flooded. The owners don't seem to care and don't seem to be that involved in the day to day operation of the hostel. The kitchen was filthy. The pancake breakfast was okay, but doesn't make it worth $85 a night! Unless you enjoy noisy drunk kids I suggest you stay away from the hostels on Mitchell St or pay more for a decent hotel.

Gecko lodge was an expensive, dirty, loud, dingy, crowded run down dump! We had a private room with shared bathroom facilities opposite our room. The toilet cistern was broken so we heard a gushing of water all night long! We complained about it on the first night but they never fixed it! In between that and the drunken louts, we didn't sleep very well at all! We also complained about the pool or urine on the floor but they never mopped that up either! I don't think they have ever cleaned the place! I would feel ashamed if I was managing the place! I highly recommend not to waste your money on this hell hole!

DON'T EVEN GO HERE!
Arrived a 2am and found an envelope with a key on the outside of reception (well 2 keys for different rooms???) Went to the 1st room and saw that the kichen was filthy with food all over the floor and left over food on the outside tables, looked in the shower room which was so dirty, so opted to use the other key which came with instructions to go to the building around the corner, "House 2".
Even worse, 6 foot fence with no lock and then up the stairs to a front door with no lock, 2 fridges in the lounge with doors wide open that were switched off, rusty and looked like they hadn't been in use for months. Lots of old tinned and packet food gathering dust on the kitchen work top and our room was at the back next to a fire escape (again wide open with no lock/barrier) and our room had the lightest door that you could see had been forced open at some point - didn't even try the air con as yellow stuff was dripping from it! Checked out at 8 even though we had paid 2 nights on the web (AUS$120/2 nights for a double room/cell!!) Went along to Banyview Lodge which was the same price and had a lovely room overlooking the pool.
Dangerous, unsafe, dosser-style accommodation, filthy, and we had been travelling for 6 months by the time we arrived here!

The advise for this hostel in our guidebook was that it was quite and with a pleasant backyard. After seeing the noisy and nightlife infatuated hostels in the middle of the town, probably this quieteness was quite valuable.

The hostel is a little bit out of the way, needing an extra 15 minutes to walk anywhere in the middle of the town. The lodge itself is pleasant, with big outdoors living area and a decent kitchen, plus a necessary pool for the warmer months (which in Darwin, are very warm). We got a 4-bed room, with a double bed and a double bulk, which was very simple and bland, but worked well. The air-conditioned was just working at night and, to be honest, not all the time.

The overall feeling was a little bit like a beach lodge, though it was not close to it, very relaxed, laid-back and simple.

We had free infinite pancakes for breakfast, and no trouble at all.
