“Prison like hostel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2012

We were in Darwin for a week but only booked 2 nights here, thankfully this was the right decision to make. It was awful!

We had spent 24hours on the Ghan and was looking forward to getting to the hostel.
Check in took 45mins. Unorganised staff flicking between guests instead of just dealing with one at a time. Finally got our room key but some guy was in our room when we went in. We then had to wait for him to move all his belongings to his correct room before we could check in.

Key deposit has to be paid on arrival

$10 deposit has to be paid every time you want to borrow a plate, knife, fork etc

Kitchen was a health hazard! Bugs and ants everywhere!

Room felt like a prison, no natural light and very basic

Unisex showers on the ground floor do not have doors, just white shower curtains

Overcharged us for our stay by $10. We questioned it on check out and they just gave us the difference back, no questions asked! I wonder how many travellers don't question it?

Room Tip: Do not stay here unless it is a last resort, as the amount of backpackers accomadation in Darwin is...

Stayed 2 nights as they offer a reimbursement on your airport shuttle ticket for 2 nights or more. Our room wasn't cleaned once and the floor was filthy, a guy staying in for 3 nights before us said he hadn't seen a cleaner once.

The showers and toilets were clean though and the jacuzzi/sundeck are nice.

No alcohol is allowed on the premises because 'their sister hostel has a licensed bar up the road'. ???

Free breakfast is bread for toast with jam portions.

$25 a night. 4 beds in a room with aircon.

Room Tip: Stay at dingomoon, breakfast is unreal and offers free laundry!

I feel like this hostels have quite a lot of long term male residents which makes the room more messy, small room played a part as well. However, the rooms have air- con & it is free which it pretty good.
The hostel is centrally located & the staffs are generally helpful.
The shower & toilet are for both sex which I think it is a bit weird.....

I am a solo traveller and have stayed in a lot of hostels, I must say that this particular hostel has got everything you need. The rooms are basic, but very clean and there is a nice spa deck with two tubs to chillout in. Free breakfast + coffee, fast internet service and an open area kitchen area. Chilli's Backpackers is cheap place to base yourself while exploring Darwin.

Before I moved to Chilis I had stayed in the YHA, and after that experience I really liked the Chilli's Backpackers.

I stayed for 2 weeks and would have stayed longer, but luckily I found a (cheaper) flatshare. I think which experience you make there mainly depends on luck. Some of the staff were very nice, welcoming and helpful, others were rude and could not be bothered. The rooms were generally clean, though a bit small and only had 1 power outlet. My room had a defect fan in the room when I moved in (the aircon worked, though) and although we asked on a daily basis it took them nearly 3 weeks to replace it - not good in the heat and humidity when you need the fan to distribute the cold air from the aircon in the room...

I liked the big open balcony social areas, one with pools and the other one with TV and the kitchen. You could look over to the Malaleuca Backpackers and I personally was glad not to be there as there was party every night and loud music (I guess if that is what you are after the Malaleuca or the Youth Shack are the right hostels for you). The Chili's was quiet - most of the times - but because of its great location you have the main street and parties just outside the door.
What I really liked was the allocated parking slot. I had to pay a $10 deposit for parking, i.e. got it back when I left and the car park is secured with electronic gates and I got "my own" slot, so no parking problems in town for me (contrary to e.g. the YHA).
The kitchen was clean most of the times with lots of big fridges and kitchen utilities could be borrowed from reception.

It may only deserve an average rating if compared with with hostels Australia-wide. However, compared with hostels in Darwin and given the very good location, on site parking and the bad reputation of the other backbacker (that are as expensive btw) I think 4 stars it is.

This place has a lot of rules but they make up for it in cleanliness and a new age look. The other hostels on the strip of Mitchell St are loud and obnoxious and that is where Chili's separates itself. There is a Global Connect internet care downstairs and the staff is pretty friendly. They have a free breakfast but it is just bread and jam and peanut butter and butter in little packets. Most places offer cereal at least (wheatbix!) so the breakfast could be better. The room was incredible. Clean and they tidy up every day. There is a sink in the room with a small fridge (in my room at least I think I heard that someone didn't have a fridge). The lockers were large and spacious and there is an adjustable air con and fan in the room too. The shower facilities are immaculant and there is a deck with two hot tubs in the rear of the second floor (but the view is not great). This place had my favorite kitchen of all of the hostels I've stayed in! It was an open balcony dining area with tons of stove tops and they have an industrial soap machine so you can clean up easily! They have pots and pans for free too (just give them your key and get it back when you return the pots). The have flat screen tvs on the balcony as well. There is no alcohol in this hostel at all but several people snuck in personal bottles and they just didn't make a big deal out of it. Most of the backpackers that stay here are responsible. There is a sister hostel several buildings down that is owned by the same company and they have a bar there and people go down there to drink. If you want to chill and relax and have a quiet experience (and even read a book.. at hostel! yes its possible!) than this is your place. You won't meet a lot of people because its sort of introverted and there isn't really a common room but there is plenty to make up for that around - and you can meet people easily at the sister hostel. Great location. Free secured parking in the rear with a gate entrance (oh and when you get the gate code if you return after hours into the gate and the office is closed there IS a chance they will have changed the lock code on you which they do periodically - this sucks. tip: if you get locked out of the gate than go park along the esplanade a block or so behind the hostel. the parking is free over-night).

Room Tip: Ask for one with a fridge!
