“Close to everything, lovely Esplanade location”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

We had a superior motel room for our 4-nite stay and were very happy with our accommodation. We were given an upstairs room with its own balcony and small kitchenette. Our room was very clean and comfortable, and was cleaned daily. The housekeeping staff we saw around the resort were very friendly and always said hello or had a quick chat whenever we passed by. The resort is in a great location close to everything in Darwin CBD and directly opposite the Esplanade parklands. There is limited off-street parking but we had no problems finding a space each day during our stay. Darwin is an expensive city for holidays but I think this resort offers particularly good value.

The only fault (and it's very minor) is that the pool hours were listed as 6am to 10pm. However, we found that the pool was closed around 8am every morning for cleaning. This just happened to be around the time our toddler wanted to go for his after-breakfast swim, so it was a slight inconvenience to have to wait another 30-45 minutes. But on the upside, the pool was always spotlessly clean and lovely to swim in!

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Palms City Resort and all your positive comments regarding the property and the team. It sounds as though you experienced the property exactly the way it was designed to be experienced. As you have expressed the resorts location is perfect for business or leisure but it definitely has the tropical feel which does set it apart from some of the other inner city hotels. I do appreciate your slight inconvenience regarding the wait for our pool to be cleaned (I also have a toddler) however this time of day has seemed to be the most convenient for the majority of our guests for this daily procedure. I have passed all your comments on to my team – we all look forward to welcoming you back to the resort!

Stayed 7 nights in a villa, cleaning leaves a lot to be desired overhead fan was very dirty and dust was on the walls. Venue is well situated in great tropical setting but the service in the Breafast room let down the establishment, one morning they ran out of toast (supermarket was 5 mins away), the morning of departure on the Ghan they ran out of eggs as this is a weekly event you would think it would be better planned. Front desk staff were very helpful but the basics of an accomodation facility were lacking. Would not stay there again as it was not value for money.

Room Tip: Would recommend the Villas

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Palms City Resort. I am disappointed that you did not find the cleaning of your villa to an appropriate standard and I will be following this up. Our guest comment cards, other reviews and recent AAA assessment reflect that our cleaning is of a particularly high standard however from your comments something has gone a miss during the servicing of your villa. I’m not sure if you mentioned it to reception during your stay as I have no record of such an issue raised? I am familiar with the day the kitchen ran out of eggs (as it is only happened twice in 5 years). This was due to a supplier not delivering the order on time. They had been contacted several times and each time it was promised that they were only 5 minutes away therefore a staff member was not sent to the supermarket. I do apologise for the inconvenience and anyone who had purchased breakfast that day was offered a reduction in the cost of breakfast. You are correct that we do know ahead of time the Ghan check out days as we have been accommodating Ghan passengers for the last 9 years and this had never been an issue before. I appreciate that you did not feel you got value for money however the vast majority of feedback also indicates that as the only 3.5 star property located in Darwin’s CBD our rates are extremely competitive (this is one on the many reasons we have so many Ghan passengers stay with us). I apologise again for not meeting your expectations on this occasion and assure you that the issues raised in your review are not common practice at all.

We loved this accommodation. The location was excellent and the facilties more than adequate. If you want a sterile room at a multi storey then this place isn't for you but I loved being in a bungalow that looked out over the park, while I listened to the guitarist playing at the bar the next corner over. Couldn't have asked for a better spot. The rooms aren't huge but they are more than big enough for a couple and the balcony gives you plenty of room to relax.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent and previous stays at Palms City Resort. It sounds as though you have experienced the resort in the way in which its design intended! I share your sentiments regarding a “sterile room at a multi storey” when you are on holiday. As you have expressed the resorts location is perfect for business or leisure but it definitely has the tropical feel which does set it apart from some of the other inner city hotels. We stayed 1 night at this hotel. It was clean, with a nice pool and centrally in the city. But 135 euros was very much for what we got.

we arrived after a 30 hour flight from the Netherlands at the hotel, but we could not get in to our room earlier. That was a pity.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Palms City Resort. I am glad you found the resort clean, with a nice pool and good location. The resorts check in time is 2pm and unfortunately during the busy months our rooms may not be ready until this time. The best way to guarantee that you will have a room to check into immediately when arriving early from international flights is to book the night prior to arrival – which may not be in your travel budget. We do offer complimentary luggage storage when guests do arrive early and access to the pool whilst you are waiting for your room to become available. I’m sorry that you felt 135 euros ($170 AUD) was too expensive for what you got. That rate is very competitive for a Darwin city hotel which also included a full buffet breakfast for two ($40 in value).

We travelled to Darwin from the Uk via Sydney and Central Australia. We spent 10 nights in the Palms.

It is close to the CBD and within easy walking distance of restaurants and pubs
Woolworth and Coles are also close by (like Tesco or Morrisons for those that don't know)

We opted for an upgrade from the standard room and got a small self contained unit with electric BBQ on the veranda. Housekeeping was completed every day and the BBQ taken away and cleaned after every use.

The pool is small but refreshing after a hot day and the whole complex is clean.

The staff are helpful and friendly. The breakfast is a good buffet type start to the day.

If staying in Darwin. I would recommend this place as a great vase.

It sounds as though you experienced the property exactly the way it was designed to be experienced. The resorts location as you have mentioned is one of the best in Darwin’s CBD within a 5 minute walk to CBD restaurants, shops, the deckchair cinema, the waterfront development and CBD shopping and therefore amkes a great base to explore Darwin and beyond. Palms City Resort is in a fantastic location in the heart of Darwin which makes getting around very easy, it's just a few minutes walk to restaurants, shops etc and directly opposite Bicentennial Park plus 5 minutes walk to the Waterfront and Deckchair cinema. I stayed in a Duplex villa for a week which suited my needs well, I think it was slightly extra cost wise but a good option since you have your own verandah and bbq which really extends the space of your room. The duplex villas aren't large (as I expect most of the rooms are) however they have everything you need including kitchenette with bar fridge and microwave. The bathrooms have a good sized shower and also come with a good quality hairdryer which was handy. This is definitely an older style motel accommodation which won't suit everyone so if you are after 5 star and really modern then this won't be the hotel for you. If you are after a well located, basic hotel which is well maintained, very clean and is reasonably priced (Darwin is an expensive place to stay) then I you'll be happy with this hotel. The staff here were consistently friendly and helpful which added to the experience making this a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Get a duplex villa if you can, not only do they have their own verandah so a little more space but t...

This was our first trip to Darwin so had no preconceived ideas about the area or accommodation. My husband booked this and I must say that it ticked all the boxes. We had a bungalow near to the pool and whilst it wasn't very large it did have a lovely little patio with a table and chairs which we fully used for relaxing with a book and a glass or two of wine. The breakfast being buffet style had quite a good selection of cold and hot food and was served until 10am. We had decided to arrive at Darwin before we hired a car but Palms City Resort was so central that we either walked everywhere or caught the local bus. We also found that the entire staff were so very friendly and helpful.
