“Great location and views, spacious and relaxing but needs a bit of TLC”
Reviewed September 12, 2010

Myself and a colleague stayed here whilst up in Darwin for work for 4 days. The apartment was a two bedroom, two bathroom one, and felt light and spacious with plenty of room. Kitchen was well equipped but could have done with a more thorough clean. Bedrooms and lounge/dining area was very light, cool and had fantastic views, with balcony + table and chairs for relaxing with a drink at the end of the day. On the down side, the bathrooms were very tired and the showers need re tiling and sprucing up. This is a pity as the rest of the apartment was great. One shower needed serious attention to the tiling. Both bathrooms are tired looking and need updating. Air con and ceiling fans were great, but the air con was a little noisy. Nice swimming pool for relaxing after a day's work. Reception hours a little limited. Overall, a great apartment and handy for all the Darwin dining and shops. Would have got a better rating if the bathrooms had come up to the 'luxury' title

We stayed for a week and and thought that the location was the highlight. It was central to the city , Cullen Bay and the waterfront / Stokes Wharf and easily walkable to all. The rooms are large and two bathrooms made it great for two adult couples. Our kitchen was quite grubby particularly the cook top and range hood, all of the crockery and cutlery required further cleaning prior to use. Bed linen and bathrooms were all clean. AC functioned well but was noisy. The unit generally looked as though it had been a long time since it had been properly cleaned and really needed a paint and "face-lift".

We struggled to get the room serviced despite several requests.

The price is probably about right for what you get ( the last minute rates on the web would have been better!) .

Note: There seems to be a significant number of owner occupiers so units may vary.

We stayed here for 3 x nights at the beginning of our Darwin trip. The Marrakai was in a convenient location (as pretty much anything along Smith, Mitchell or the Esplanade are) with Hertz and Avis car rentals on either side. As we did a side trip out of Darwin we were able to leave our car parked in the Avis car park for a few days.
The apartment we had included 2 bedrooms and 2 x bathrooms, all spacious and the lounge / dining area and also the kitchen were also a great size. The only drawback or disappointing factor would be in the name of the place. The apartment we had was certainly not a 'luxury' apartment. If anything I would describe the building as having a 1970s feel to it. The apartment we had could probably do with some re-carpeting and an update to the kitchen. Perhaps each apartment is separately owned and there may be variances between which one you might get, I'm not sure. Otherwise, it was clean and secure (needing swipe keys to enter the basement car park and access to the floor). The air con worked well enough (if not a little noisy). For a few days staying in the one place I think a bit of space works wonders and this was certainly a plus for the Marrakai.
As we arrived on a weekend we were never really able to access the reception for any assistance (as these had limited hours). Not so great but somewhat expected for apartment stays.

We stayed here for 3 nights with our daughter after 6 days in Kakadu. The facilities are excellent , 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom with laundry and huge kitchen. We were on 9th floor , with wrap around verandahs.
Our daughter went to fish markets and got some mud crabs, oysters and bugs for dinner and we sat on verandar with champagne and oyster watching the most amazing sunset..
the Hertz hire car return was right next door. It was the most covinient place to stay , everything was in walking distance.

We had a bad experience on arrival in darwin prior to travelling around kakadu. We booked apartment 45 through Michelle at Tourism Top End. Pity we did not find this on the first time in. Excellent apartment, fantastic views and close to everything. Would thouroughly recommend this facility

Good location on the edge of the CBD, ie one street back from esplanade, but very walkable to everything you want.

Rooms very comfortable, very clean. Plasma/LCD TV with Fox. Well equipped kitchen, large main bathroom, 2 bedrooms which sleep up to 5.

Rooms and amenties pictured on site very representaive of reality (I know this sounds weird, but sometimes when you arrive it's not quite as nice as the picture on the website).

It's not 5 star, but its a very affordable (by Darwin prices) and very comfortable unit.

  • Liked — Good location, walking distance to all CBD attractions
  • Disliked — would have liked a 3 bedroom option
