“A great place to stay in Darwin”
Reviewed June 24, 2012

Spent 3 nights at the Alatai Holiday Appartments in May 2012 and found this place ideal. We arrived at 5 am and found our keys in the safe box outside reception as instructed beforehand. Had some problem using the keypad so used the phone provided and a friendly voice explained what to do.

The room was large with a bed and a sofa. The kitchenette had a fridge and microwave oven. Plates, glasses, knives ...etc.. were provided. The room and bathroom were clean. So no problem. The decoration is simple/basic.

The room was on the ground floor next to the swimming pool. Very few people were there at the time and we had the swimming pool to ourselves at lunchtime and in the evening. We had our meals by the pool using the seats and tables provided. There was no-one around to spoil our enjoyment.

In 15 minutes you can walk to the large Woolworth supermarket and a bank. Few more minutes and you're in the town centre. Darwin is fairly compact so you can walk to the harbour and enjoy the scenery.

A bus/taxi can also take you there. If you have a car, there are parking spaces outside the reception and restaurant building.

In 15 minutes you can walk to the Botanic Garden. Mindil Beach is about 5 minutes walk from the Botanic Garden. Walk an extra 10 minutes along the coast and you reach the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory which is a must visit place in Darwin.

If you stay at the Alatai when the place is packed at certain time of the year, I can easily believe there could be problem with noisy customers.

I feel I can recommend this place if you want to cater for yourself and don't mind simple furniture.

We booked the Alatai Apartments for a week long stay in Darwin. It was the most reasonably priced we could find, knowing that Darwin accommodation is typically expensive. It's well located, within walking distance of most of what Darwin city has to offer. Bear in mind if you do plan to walk that Darwin's extreme weather may not lend itself to lengthy trekking. If you do decide to hire a car (as we did), there is plenty of free parking in the apartment complex.

The rooms are basic and the decor is a little tired but it is comfortable, reasonably sized and clean. We had a studio apartment which had a king sized bed, kitchenette and decent bathroom. We made good use of the pool on most days and the air conditioning and fan kept the room comfortable.

Unfortunately, the major issue with this venue is the noise factor. The shape of the complex, with the internal walkways and stairways and shared balconies coupled with very little in the way of sound insulation meant that sound travelled around and through windows, walls and doors. Darwin's warm night weather means people tend to hang around outside, on balconies, and leave their doors and windows open, adding to the noise. And have you ever noticed how people are physically unable to close a door quietly when they're on holidays . . . ?

We were unlucky enough to be next to the German solar car challenge team who were extremely noisy and boisterous for the first half of our stay and who we had to ask repeatedly to turn their TV down, keep the noise down etc (late at night, 5.30 starts in the morning) and eventually speak to the front desk staff about them. Even so, once they had calmed down, we could still hear talking, cupboards being opened, spoons being used in bowls etc.

If the Alatai Apartments were able to better soundproof their rooms, this would be a really pleasant place to stay. If you happened to stay when all the other guests were quiet, you'd enjoy a nice relaxing visit.

Room Tip: Seek a room at the end to avoid through traffic. Sun comes up early and straight through the windows...

Would never stay here again. Stayed for a week and had parties going on in next door rooms all hours of the night and complaints to the "night manager " went unheeded. Basic rooms and a little tired and certainly not the lush tropical gardens as in advertising. Seems noise is an issue at this place so if you want a quiet nights sleep look elsewhere.

For a rate of $220 a night these apartments were sadly lacking.
Decor was very tired and there were not even bedside lights so you had to get out of bed to turn light off. Fan in bedroom was very noisy. Bed was hard.

We began and ended our 7 night visit to the top end with a night at the Alatai apartments. 2 bedroom apartments are very expensive in Darwin in July, so this place at $255/night was good value for its location, well maintained and clean. It’s not right in the CBD, but just on the edge and not too far to walk. Only a few minutes drive too from the Mindil beach markets which are a great night’s out. It has a full kitchen with lounge, double bedroom, 2nd room with 2 singles and a rollaway in the lounge room.

Staff were very helpful, nice grounds and pool with BBQ area and table settings to eat outdoors. It really is a good base for families, even a washing machine and dryer in the bathroom which is very handy. All in all a great stay, would certainly return if back here with our kids.

Quiet spot away from main city centre but close enough for easy walking around CBD. Friendly staff, clean and well appointed rooms, lovely pool. Reasonably priced. Was a perfect place for our week long stay.
