“You'll be right, she's only a Freshie!”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

So, when noone else would take us on trip to Northern Australia in the wet season, we should have known we'd be in for some adventures! And Mike didn't disappoint. We, two Brits with a love of wildlife and wide open spaces, first travelled with Mike back in 1999 I think it was. Mike rocks up in his combie and promptly takes us off up some unbeaten track to a thermal pool by a ragingly full river. He strips down to his swimmers (keeping his Akubra on of course) and jumps in! We stand there like a couple of idiots on the bank wondering if he's going to get chomped by a croc. After 5 minutes, we thought "to hell with it" and jumped right in. It was divine! It was only then that Mike explained to us about Freshies and Salties - as in crocodiles and where they hang out - happily not ordinarily on a freshwater river that is waaayyy in land! It was then that he coined the phrase, "you'll be right, she's only a Freshie!" And we believed him every time!

We had such a great time on that first trip, that we've been back several times and would go again at the drop of an Akubra! We've ended up in some bonkers places, met some extraordinary people and done some mad things, but it's been a blast and an amazing experience every time. We've stayed in camps that were closed for the wet season and had the whole place to ourselves - what a privilege. We've sat in a stream, while Mike rustled up a cappuccino; had picnics in places no-one else gets to (with the help of a chopper); gone mud crab fishing with a wonderful Aborginal family, who then cooked us up a great dinner of crab, oysters, fish and dampers (bread) all on an open fire - delicious and couldn't have been fresher!; and generally had a bloody good laugh. All of this done without compromising on good food and grog (booze), and some great places to stay!

We still have to go back and do the Outback Pub Crawl, something we've talked about for ages! Mike has been very helpful in doing the research into this!!!

So, we guarantee that you will have a fabulous time, every time, just as we have had. Mike is such a great host, you will be entertained in every way!

We will be back! thanks Mike and keep up the great work!

“An Amazing Adventure”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

Mike took my sister, my parents and me around Kakadu National Park for a couple of days. We didn't have much time but he planned the perfect itinerary for us. When a road was flooded out he knew exactly where to go instead. While driving us around the Park he shared his knowledge of the landscape and culture, and kept us entertained with stories of his adventures. He incorporated our desire to flight see the Jim Jim waterfalls and knew the best time of day to do it. Mike really was a phenomenal guide and we would fully recommend him to everyone.

“Best outback guide in Australia”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

When I fell in love with the outback in 1995, I quickly learned that it is wise to have a guide who can take you into nook and crannies and also keep you from being stranded in the wrong place, unprepared. Soon I started Essential DownUnder Travel, planning custom itineraries for people who want to experience Australia. For over a decade now, Mike Keighley has been a phenomenal guide to the outback - especially the Top End. Mike gave me once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Like the night a bunch of gals arrived dusty and tired in the Never-Never, and Mike put lighted candles by the billabong so we could have a dip after dusk. The joy of waking up to the smell of his freshly baked damper on the barbie. Catching a big barra, having him wrap it in bark and bake it in the ashes. Hearing adoring Aboriginal children through themselves in his arms screaming "Mikeleighy! Mikeleigy!" Listening too him croon as he strummed his guitar by the campfire. Watching him transform two city teenagers into bushy women! Mike tailors every moment to be better than each traveler could have dreamed. My clients have been incredibly happy. He is simply the best.

“An unforgettable experience”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

We are two fairly fit and active couples in our 60s who booked Mike to take us on a customised five day round trip from Darwin. We travelled into and around Kakadu National Park, to Mataranka, into the Never Never and back through Litchfield Park in a four-wheel drive vehicle. Mike booked all our accommodation and arranged our "picnic" lunches on the road each day. His planning and itinerary showed an exceptional knowledge of the area and the sights as well as a sensitivity to what he thought would particularly interest us.
As well as the major tourist spots we were able to enjoy some special out of the way areas that we would never have known about nor found on our own. We were treated to an abundance of wild life - Mike seemed to know just where to find it all.
We swam in water holes and thermal pools and always had as much time in a place as we wanted.
This trip has changed our understanding of this area of our country's north as well as many issues surrounding our indigenous communities. Recommended without reservation.
Thanks Mike for a really memorable experience!

“Life changing adventure”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

We were privileged to be able to undertake a 4WD trip from Darwin to Kakadu, Katherine and back with Mike. He is the perfect guide, allowing you to experience the area off the beaten track. We have so many wonderful memories -- swimming at night in hot springs, amazing hikes and waterfalls, ancient rock art, massive termite hills, breathtaking views, indigenous culture... We can't recommend it highly enough. Our family includes both teenagers and younger children and Mike made sure to cater to everyone in his entertaining, understated and at the same time, highly informative way.
