We were quite pleased with our stay here. The rooms ar a bit dated but very clean and a bit larger than more modern rooms. The balcony is very small but the view of the harbour is wonderful. The staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. A 5 min walk to the city centre.
I would definately stay here again and would recommend upgrading to a harbour view room.

The location is ok 5 min walk into town, the staff were helpful and really good. We went on an overnight trip to Kakadu National Park and the hotel looked after our lugage while we were gone. The pool area is nice, the rooms were ok felt clean enough but are in need of a bit of updating.

In Darwin you’ll find two Holiday Inns with confusingly similar names located, side-by-side, along the Esplanade. There’s the Holiday Inn Darwin (the one I’m talking about here) and the Holiday Inn Darwin Esplanade. Even more confusingly the Holiday Inn web site shows the picture of the pool at the Darwin Esplanade on the web page for the other hotel!

Of all the hotels along the Esplanade, the Holiday Inn Darwin is the furthest away from the city centre (what there is of the centre!) but nevertheless it’s only a pleasant 5 to 10 minute stroll to get there. One side of the Esplanade road is fronted by hotels and houses, the other is a flat grassy strip with trees – beyond which is the water. Given the lack of obstructions and the height of the hotel, consider getting a sea view room (with balcony included) for the views (the sunsets viewed from here were the best that we saw during our stay in Oz). The balconies however are tiny – big enough for two or three people standing up or one chair (at a squeeze!). The front of the hotel is parallel with the road so all sea view rooms have a full on view of the water. There are plenty of parking spaces in the hotel’s free car park.

In 2006 we stayed from the 15th to the 20th September in room 713. Whereas the reception area and restaurant on the ground floor looked modern and well decorated, the corridor outside our room looked shabby with very badly marked magnolia walls and carpets. Redecoration is certainly required. I don’t know if the other floors were any better.

The décor in the room also looked a little tired and the bathroom was especially worn and aged. It was however a very large, spacious, room with sliding patio style glass doors leading out on to the balcony.

Somedays the room wasn’t cleaned until 3.45pm and the bathroom could have been cleaned better.

At breakfast there’s a choice of a cold buffet or cooked food. The food was fine. It was good to see large quantities of fruit and a blender to make your own fresh juices. The abiding memory of the breakfasts was the vanishing cutlery! As soon as you go up to get more food, the staff the whip the used cutlery off the table which, after a while, got to be a real pain as you have to keep asking for replacements. It’s nice to see diligent staff but this was a bit over the top.

This hotel is sometimes used by large coach parties and when everyone piles out of the coach you can forget about using the lift.

On the whole though it was an adequate, average, hotel. Next time we’d probably try a different hotel but if push came to shove we would stay there again. We had no major issues with it.

Ok. My expectations were not high, I just wanted a clean convenient room. The balcony and view were very nice indeed. The bed was uncomfortable, the room was not well cleaned, the bathroom was old, old, old and need in refurbishing. Small details: the strip between the door and the hall was filthy. The grout in the bathroom was grungy. The clerks at the desk downstairs ranged from unhelpul to indifferent to helpful - very uneven service.

The 'restaurant' in house was an interesting experience. First, we had just arrived after almost 24 hrs of travel. I was hungry and wanted to eat then go to bed. The restaurant opened at 6pm. At 6:05 we presented ourselves and they told us they could seat us but it would be quite a while before they could serve us. (Perhaps a tour bus??). I had noticed that they had a Curry Bar on the menu, which I thought (silly me) was like a salad bar and you got to pick from several selections, so I told them it was ok, I wouldn't need anything cooked up we'd just be doing the Curry Bar. Turns out that this only meant they had a couple of curry mains on the menu? Huh? Thought perhaps it was a culture clash but checked it out with other locals and they didn't understand it either. Yikes.

So, found food, and got the heck out of Darwin as soon as possible.

We were happy with the holiday Inn Darwin. For the first 3 days we stayed in a regular room. The balcony provided a breeze which was why we wanted it & enabled us to not use the AC
The pub placed ye olde rock n roll for a while but stopped in the mid evening.
The breakfast was good providing a sound start to the day. We ordered in a couple of times & it was quite adequate.
They have a coin laundry which worked OK
THe bed was comfortable & all the amenities worked well
The staff were really helpful

What a disappointment. I was quite looking forward to coming to Darwin and staying at the Holiday Inn. But when I arrived yesterday, I could not believe my eyes. I was booked here for a month by the company. As soon as I have found something else I will move out.
