Finally someone is doing it right!
Great coffee, consistent and velvety smooth.
Beautifuk cakes and their apple tart tartan yummy!!!

The filtered water and scented towels add a very nice touch. When java first opened I was suspect that this may stop after a while but months on it's exactly the same.

Good friendly service, though sometimes the front where staff cant see from the counter can be a little forgotten but I can forgive that for everything else. Im guilty of frequent visits and always get suckered into having a second coffee!!

Hi Darwinite! I am so happy that we have provided something that is not only very welcome to the visitors to the Tropics but also to our precious residents who have lived a long time without having a little Luxe with their coffee! To have good quality consistent coffee in a beautiful place with a great ambiance and a really good weekend vibe - we are open 7 days - with live sets of acoustic music (Banjo, mandolin and guitar - and it is true that the Mandolin player was the stand-for George Harrison from the Beatles in the UK so old guys but great musicians) Thank you for being a regular!! Kindest Regards, Moya

“Expensive!”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

I just paid $6.10 for a small soy milk cappuccino. Nice decor and reasonably ok friendly staff. But my coffee was a take away and not that good in my opinion! Don't think I can warrant such an expensive coffee.

Hello and thank you for your comments. We have changed pricing slightly particularly for the soy lovers.. We find that although a good quality soy milk is about twice the price of dairy milk, it is a bit dearer for a soy drinker and they seem to be a bit more price conscious as customers. So we hear you! When you pay for takeaway container complete with 2 shots of ILLY coffee with 12 oz of soy which is the size of the cup in this review (or our grande which is our large size 16 oz of soy with 3 shots) it can add up.
However, some cafes do not do soy at all or soy on the side because it is too expensive for them to buy the quality that froths and holds the crema. We hope you try again and of course we do have Happy Time which is from 6.30 in the morning until 9.30 for takeaways which is very good value..

“seriously good”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

Been to Java Spice weekly since December. Always great food, friendly waitstaff. Can be super busy but I've not encountered a problem with an order so far. Great naughty boy pork roll, homemade cake always available- must be made in house - reminds me of the baked treats made by my favourite aunt. Highly recommended.

“Position-Position but............”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

As long time locals we thought we would give it a try - what a disappointment! Pretentious would be a mild description, lots of art (?) works and fancy pots but , hey, we wanted a coffee and a snack. The staff were supremely supercilious and gave the impression that we ought to be grateful to be allowed in! Slow service but a nice add on starter of a cool towel and water. The snack- when they got the order right second time round was ordinary to say the least and looked and tasted the same despite the wordy description. The coffee nothing special and compared with near by establishments about Grade 3. A nice bright red coffee machine but obviously a learner or probationary driver! Its a place where, it appears, one goes to be "seen" Darwins minimal glitterati wander in and out but - hey, we wanted a coffee and a snack not a fashion parade. Not a lot of change out of $30 for two coffees , 2 slices of rasin toast and a mangled ham and cheese toasted sandwich, Ho Hum.. unlikely to return as there is better coffee and tucker within walking distance and at least the staff there smile when they serve you and grab your money, by the way, 'real ' money appears distasteful to the Java Spice staff - 'proper' upmarket people use credit cards.....!

Dear SydnPolly, What a disappointment this review is to us! It is hard to believe that you were in our cafe! I guess it is possible a Brett Whitely or Ray Crooke may have art (?) with a question mark after it but there are those who would disagree. But our intention is to stimulate the senses and cause conversation so if you did not feel these works and many like them were art then that is valid from your perception. There is no intention to be pretentious at all. We have a credit card facility - your choice of course. Many cafes simply have 'cash only' which can be interesting if you did not know it..
All our staff are trained and no-one is behind the machine who is a beginner. Our training is done off-site so NOT practiced on the guest. Interesting comment on the food - we have a money back guarantee on our Toastie and if you had voiced your concern, it would have been free. Our ham and cheese toastie is hand cut freshly baked bread, full to the brim with carved ham off the bone, quality cheese, mustard, pepper and salt & tomato, cooked fresh on a grill. Our raisin toast is handcut (for thickness) served with real butter, cinnamon sugar, 2 pieces, is full of fruit, spice and nuts and baked especially for us. Two Illy coffees and food is around $27 and most people say that they are full for the rest of the day I am sorry you did not enjoy the experience particularly as you have been here as long if not longer than my husband and I. (30 plus years) We want something special for our locals. Perhaps on a second visit you may enjoy the experience more. We would welcome you back. Regards, Moya

“You get what you pay for”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

I've been going to Java Spice for a few weeks now - it's my fave coffee/tea/sandwich/cake experience in Darwin!

Really... you want cheap coffee, go to Macca's. You want great coffee, gorgeous cake, big fat crispy toasties, opulent surroundings, music (and handsome musicians) and comfy chairs (if you get there in time) then go to Java Spice!

Loads of people enjoy JS - getting a seat on the weekend or other busy times of the day during the week is testament to that!

Dear Chrissy B, Many thanks for your review. We do try very hard to make the toasties the best in any cafe.. Hence the money back guarantee. Our new favourite is the roasted chicken with avocado, tomato and cheese toastie and it is so delicious it is addictive. The handsome musicians said to say Thank you very much for noticing.. And wanted to be pointed in your direction so please make yourself known next visit!! Kindest Regards, Moya
