“Overpriced hostel”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

I felt that this hostel was overpriced for what it was. I stayed here for one night, and after a long overnight flight arrived at the hostel at 7am, to find that I wasn't able to check in until 2pm! I understand that they probably couldn't let me in to the room at 7, but I had to hang around, exhausted (!) until 2pm when I could finally check in to my room. I had another overnight flight the following day and was also shocked to discover that check out in the morning was 10am! The hostel overall was ok; seemed to be full of people working/looking for jobs, so I'd probably look to stay somewhere else if you're looking to meet people and stay for one or two nights. Bathrooms fine, dorm room a bit small and only two plug sockets, which was a pain. Overall, ok, but nothing special and probably wouldn't recommend it to others.

Hi VJ89,

Thank you for your review of Melaleuca on Mitchell, Darwin. Thank you for your feedback regarding the hostel. I am sorry that you are unhappy with the check in and check out times that we offer at our property. We do advise that our check in time is not until 2pm in the afternoon which allows us to check people out at 10am and then re-organise beds and rooms for arriving guests.

We do have services available to meet guests needs during these times. Free luggage storage, use of our leisure deck and communal bathrooms before you check in and after you check out until 10pm at night.

We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your trip to Australia.

Regards

Way overpriced to start. The dorms are gloomy with only one socket for six people. The beds are squeaky with thin plastic mattresses that are so uncomfortable. The kitchen is supposedly cleaned 3 times daily but every time I went in over three days, whether at breakfast, lunch or dinner it was absolutely filthy, my shoes were sticking to the floor, there was no clean space to put down any food and the toasters and kettles were broken. The bathrooms weren't as bad but still quite dirty. The rooftop area is cramped and noisy and the 'pool' is just like an oversized bath. There is no lounge or chill out area. I son't know how this place has won awards it is just horrible. I have stayed in far nicer hostels for much cheaper.

HI Laburna,

Thank you for your review of Melaleuca on Mitchell. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. The hostel is large, sleeping 450 people so there is always going to be alot of people "hanging around" in the different communal areas that we have. The communal kitchen has two specific cleaning periods each day and the staff do go in a couple of times to potter around and tidy up after our guests. The pool is an outside pool located in our tropical environment.

We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your trip around Australia.

Really helpful staff. Clean and comfortable rooms. Seemed like the place to be, right in the middle of Mitchell St. No breakfast available but so close to lots of eateries not needed. Wifi very reasonable also.

Room Tip: Ground floor quiet, ensuite.

There's provision for chidren on the website but beware.

We stayed here for one night after arriving Darwin at 1.00am.
The place is located in the party precinct which was alive and well on this very saturday.
We checked in and had to step over an amorous couple on the way to our room.
The corridors have that dorm body odour smell I remember so well from my backpacking days.

Sleep was difficult due to fellow guests partying in the corridor, the ancient noisy airconditioner, and the spectre of the long black hairs I'd removed from my sheets earlier.

In the morning my daughter went to the female bathroom across from our room while I waited outside. Not long after, a young male in his underpants came out of the bathroom and staggered back to his nearby room!

Probably not a bad backpackers if you're a young traveller with an anything goes attitude.

Just don't take your kids there.

Dear zozo 1725,

Thank you for your review of Melaleuca on Mitchell, Darwin. I am sorry that you did not think that our backpackers hostel was appropriate for your family. We do cater for a variety of guests including travelers from around the world, sports groups, couples and families. We have a variety of rooms with private and shared bathrooms to cater for everyone's requirements and budgets.

We do not want males in the female bathrooms which is why they are single sex bathrooms and not unisex. I have passed your feedback onto my housekeeping and security teams.

I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your trip to tropical Darwin.

Regards
Sheena and the team at MOM.

My partner and i stayed in one of the 4 person dorms as there weren't any double rooms left,(our tour company failed to organise this earlier) this wasn't too bad as the couple we stayed with had just arrived from a long flight out of Europe so they pretty much went to sleep.
The room was clean, the mattress had a few cracks in it, thankfully we had our own pillows since the one provided looked like it had seen many a nights action.
Slamming doors and noise from the outside but that's to be expected, otherwise we had a lucky escape from the dorm experience!

Very well positioned in the heart of the backpacker district. There are plenty of restaurants on the street to suit all budgets. There is also a coles supermarket across the road which is handy for the self caterers. There are a few pubs/bars on the street, which have open eating areas however this can sometimes be noisy.

The rooms are pretty standard for youth hostels. We stayed in the share dorms. The mattresses were covered in sticky plastic which made for uncomfortable sleeping, especially during warm nights. The windows did not have proper shades to block light from neighboring businesses. The communal areas were kept clean and were user friendly. The main eating area is right next to the bar and pool, which is convenient but it is often busy and difficult to get seating to eat your meal. But it was a good environment to meet new people and everyone we met was friendly and easy to talk to.

Service quality was variable. Some staff went out of their way to be friendly however some clearly hated their job and verged on rude.

Wifi is not free at the hostel but every bus stop and macdonalds in Darwin has free wifi, so DONT PAY FOR WIFI

Room Tip: It was peak season when we traveled so when I booked there wasn't room for my friend and I to st...
