Owner description: A B-52 bomber (one of only two on display outside the U.S.) is exhibited here along with other military aircraft, engines and the wreckage of a Japanese Zero fighter shot down in the 1942 air raids on Darwin.

I was stunned when I first saw the B52. I knew they were big, but!!!. There are many different types of aircraft, photos, uniforms and a film of the bombing of Darwin, which was very sobering. There is also a display called the 500. This is walls of the young Australians who fought and died in Vietnam, photos and the story of Long Tan, somewhere I have recently visited. But, the B52 was incredible, we were told it is one of only two left and was donated to the museum by the American government. I thnk them for that. Expect to spend more than two hours there.

Note: Can you please amend the date of the visit to October 2010, Thanks Chris

With young boy in tow we ventured into this Aviation Museum not knowing what to expect. The number of planes and interesting displays, artefacts and history makes this a must see attraction for the whole family.

The ranges of aircraft has to be seen to be believed, with the Mirage Jet and B52 a couple of highlights.

There is plenty to occupy two to three hours, (or more) with the ability to touch many of the aircraft and displays, and read and see photos of Darwin’s Military History during the 2nd World War, as well as the Vietnam War and non-military stories. I commend the work of the members of the Aviation Historical Society of Northern Territory who have collected, displayed and are maintaining large range of displays. My boys still talk about the planes and the history they learnt about.

Probably a half day while in Darwin. If you like aviation you will find this interesting. My only comment would be that they could do a bit more to keep children engaged.

We had a visit to the Aviation Heritage Centre included in our Bombing of Darwin Tour. The tour on its own was quite intesting and the museum just added to the experience.

I stayed home but my husband loved this. We went to the other war museum which I enjoyed but my husband really enjoyed this museum too.
Also go to the original Qantas Hanger to see the old vintage cars/trucks/fire engines etc.
