“Skycity generally quite good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2006

The staff are helpful & friendly. The restaurants are very cheap compared to other Darwin restaurants probably because they are a part of the Casino.
The room was nice and had a view of the lawn & could see the ocean. Bathroom and bed facilities were good.
Only one complaint - you cant turn off the air conditioner.
We went there in July and wanted to climatize ourselves to Darwin as we come from melbourne.
The evenings are not what you call hot & dont need an Aircon running 24/7.
We had to rug up to sleep the first night.
The rooms have a balcony tho so you can open the balcony door.
But it was still unnatural & unnecesary being in AC all the time.
Spoke to the desk & they said they have the ac on all the time to keep the mould away as its the tropics. We stayed at another hotel for the second half of our trip & could switch of the AC & didnt have problems with mould.
But Skycity also said its because they have a 5 star rating. Interesting
But overall and ok place

  • Liked — friendly staff room mostly nice. nice balcony & view
  • Disliked — the aircon could not be turned off

Stayed in June 06
Fabulous room in Superior, but dont stay near reception in the disabled room unless you're disabled, heaps of room but really noisy, can hear all the noise in the hall outside.
My friend stayed in softer furnished and different design room right next door to mine and had no noise problem. superior room ground floor is good if with kids.

The new horizon pool was why we booked, the kids (6yrs old) loved it.

The pool side menu was very limited and all fried food.

The kids menus are all fried nuggets or fish and chips.

The Buffet for breakfast cheap at only $10Au dollars but I would rather have paid double and had something I could eat!

All the food is in the casino and you get the feeling of a great hotel tacked onto a casino and a cop out of them using all the casino facilities instead of having their own.

The chinese resturant was average but edible and over priced.

The staff in the casino cannot make a simple coffee and the poolside cocktails were cheap but average.

Lunch buffet revolting and leftovers from breakfast.

5 stars for the room fit out
5 stars for location
5 stars to the tour desk and reception
5 stars for the pool
6 stars for the sunset
5 stars for Mindel Markets next door, great food and rides for kids & bargains
1 star for the food
1 star for the drinks
1 star for the noise from the casino

Highly recomend the Litchfield day tour if with kids as Kakadu is too far and too long for kids. Go with the tour company that has a toilet on the bus (kids need it).

Thanks to Thomas who booked our tour, very professional.

Staff other than in the reception and tour desk (ie. the casino tacked on) are young, unhelpful, sometimes rude (breakfast buffet), lacking knowledge or pride in their job, on tourist visas (most german or french) and not treating their job or the customers seriously.

Wake up Sky City and provide hotel service instead of using the tacky 2star casino next door to surfice.

Could be a great hotel if an effort was made.

Didnt get to go to the casino in the 6 days there, as had my daughter with me and no kids allowed (not that I'd let her in that place). The dress code of the casino was very slack and some patrons looked liked they were homeless...spooky.

Yes, stay there, no dont eat there, go to Cullen Bay and eat at Buzz Cafe, the only good breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee we had while staying in Darwin.

No kids club at the resort, and when asked reception, the response was, "we're a casino". No they are a hotel joined to a casino, why would that mean they cant have a kids club?

The casino next door did not have anything to do with me booking there, infact would have preferred it not being there, booked for the pool, the room and the great weather they have in winter.

My 6yr old loved her holiday. I was 50/50

Hope this helps

Contrary to other review I enjoyed my stay at Skycity. The room was clean, definitely not bug infested and was very quiet. The primary restaurant was in the Keno area but as I don't gamble it wasn't a problem and didn't intrude. The other restaurants were good. As a non-gambler why was I staying here - I was at a conference plus taking some extra time to look around Darwin area. The pool area at hotel was very good and poolside drinks and service were always available. Mindil beach and market just a walk away. Overall - a very pleasant stay.

We stayed in this hotel after touring round Kakadu and Litchfield national parks. It was fantastic! We got upgraded to a recently refurbished spa room and it was amazing. Very luxurious, spacious and clean. The staff were very friendly. Skycity is situated right on Mindil beach - very handy - watched some beautiful sunsets! One minor point was not all the restaurants were available when we were there and the buffet was very busy. Overall though, a great hotel.

Stayed at this hotel for a change and was really looking to be impressed however this was not forthcoming! Breakfast Buffet was full and I was told this was the normal thing, which didnt help and recieved no further information on when I could get in! Accommodation was looking worn out despite some of the renovations they have recently published. Pool will be the best feature.. again when finished. Staff were average at hotel, so I will be going back to the hotel I usually book at in town as the distance from the city did impact my stay.

Right from the time we stepped foot into the foyer at 1am in the morning the staff were extremely helpful unpacked our car, parked it and sent luggage to our room.

The room was spotless and large with balcony, door locked during wet season but will unlock if you sign a waiver, beds the best we have slept in while away. Beautiful views of Mindil beach, large pool with bar service and the casino on the premises. Putting green outside our room and acres and acres of gardens to roam (comlete with native wildlife) with short stroll to beach.

Great breakfast (buffet) 9.95 p/p. Security was excellent. Bus at door to town.

Will definitely stay here again. We were never bored.

Certainly was not a 5 star hotel more like a 3 star.
Rooms need updating as very basic.
Spacious rooms ..tiles on floor. Nice outlook but could'nt open doors to balcony.
Restaurants were terrible except the chinese.
Out of town....have to catch taxi to town.
Really the only good thing about this hotel was the pool area which very appealing.
