Skycity Darwin
Ranked #14 of 36 Hotels in Darwin
Reviewed April 28, 2005

I recently had a 3 night stay in Darwin and stayed at the Skycity property on Mindil Beach. My travel agent had mixed up dates and I turned up to the hotel with out a 'reservation' for my stay. The reception staff at skycity were fantastic and soon had a room available for me after a very short wait. Upon check in I was informed by reception that there were obvious renovations happening and that the noise would be very minimal to guests as the hotel reno's are due to finish in the first week of May and that there is now mainly just final preparations to the new rooms. I also think that it is good to see that renovations are happening in this property as it shows that Skycity is committed to making their new investment a successful one!
Throughout my stay, I was not inconvenienced at all and believe that the staff there are very friendly and helpful!

This is the worst hotel we have stayed especially as it's marketed as 5 *.
Our original room, a superior delux, on the ground floor was nice and had good facilities but was next to the renovations ( which we not aware of when booking) and very noisy. It had a balcony out into the gardens but we were told it was locked for our comfort and safety in the wet season and if we wanted it open we would have to pay! A poster in the room said the same thing. After complaining about the noise we were moved to a suite but unfortunately this was above the workmen and just as noisy. Our third move was to another suite which was tired but ok.
Having staying in other casino resorts such as Burswood in Perth and the Crown in Melboure we expected the same. The hotel and casino seperate.
Not so, we had breakfast included in our price but as the resturant was in the middle of the Keno area and surrounded by pokies this was not relaxing and the food was the same every day. This resturant also overlooked the pool, not a particularily nice area. The gym was closed as were the toilets close to the pool. We were not able to get pool side service for drinks and one day I had to ask for lounger covers to be put out.
The chinese resturant and Evoo resturant were good but not to the same standard as Pee-wee's for example. ( a must visit resturant in Darwin)
The upstairs corridors of the hotel, partially outside, were dirty and full of bugs.
STAY ANYWHERE BUT SKY CITY. Both Saville suites and the Novotel looked good.

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at Skycity. Having spoken to the locals in the Casino, it was sold by MGM to the new management in +/-Nov 2004.

There was building work currently going on near the casino and in the rooms behind reception. It was a family trip so my brother (26) and I (30) had a twin room and my parents were in the King Suite with a Spa overlooking the ocean. From our first twin room we could hear the building work, but a quick visit to the ever so helpful reception staff had us moved to a quieter room by the time we returned from our day trip. The maids were very pleasant too.

There is a nice beach though we couldn't swim in the sea because of the box jellyfish in the wet season. There was always a good ocean breeze so walks on the beach were pleasant. A good sized swimming pool with a terrace and kiddy pool, were a refreshing change to the hot temperatures in Darwin, plus there is a golf course opposite the hotel with amazingly low green fees.

The staff at SkyCity could not have been friendlier. Emma, Imogen, Sindy and Wendy on reception were SO helpful. Robert who oversaw the restaurants was a star and all the concierge team went out of their way to be as helpful as possible. It was a 7A$ ride into Darwin town for restaurants and night life and also 7A$ to Cullen Bay where I'd thoroughly recommend the Buzz Cafe.

SkyCity had three main restaurants. An all you can eat buffet (Breakfast for A$9.95, Dinner for A$19.95 or Surf & Turf Special for A$11.95).

A Chinese restaurant open Weds to Sundays and an Australian Cuisine restaurant on the third floor which had great food.

We booked directly with the hotel originally but a helpful member of staff (who will remain nameless!) told me to log onto (---) for much better room rates and on the nights that wotif didn't have availability but the hotel had space, SkyCity matched the rate. Very impressive.

If you are looking for a hotel on the beach, with restaurants, and fancy a flutter in the Casino (nothing like Vegas but ample) then I'd recommend it.

Theo, UK.

I stayed in a "King Suite" here in June 2004. The room was beautiful complete with spa bath, two toilets, tvs, lounges etc. and the staff were wonderful. To look out the window each morning and see the huge goannas (native lizards) roaming the grounds was amazing! The property has direct beach access to see stunning sunsets each afternoon and is adjacent to the Mindil beach markets held on Thursday and Sundays between May and October. As for the casino itself the smoke free gaming room below the main floor was a welcome surprise. I would definately stay again.

This is a run down, poorly managed hotel and I cannot believe that MGM Mirage would put their name to this mess of a hotel!, The staff in the hotel are rude and arrogant, whilst the casino staff are junior and inexperienced. The entire property looks as if it belongs in 1960
