“A Nice Hotel”
Reviewed April 9, 2007

Novotel Atrium
Good sized room with all the amenities needed. The jungle atrium was interesting and seemed to make the hotel more relaxed and informal yet still smart. The staff were friendly, helpful and well trained. The swimming pool was out doors and looked little used. The hotel was reported as full but did not appear so. The restaurant ZEST was being refurbished but the temporary one in the Atrium worked fine. The Esplanade is a one sided street of hotels and apartments behind which are bars, shops, banks, cafes and restaurants. We would stay there again.

We stayed here overnight on our way to Kakadu National Park (which my wife and I would recommend).

To put it bluntly the hotel and the room were average and expensive (over $200AU). The room is average size, has poor bathroom facilities and a very poor, unsupportive bed. The hotel provides no internet access above the lobby floor and wifi access is very expensive.

On the plus side there is free parking and a nice pool area - food is very average. The hotel is centrally located for Darwin but that is not necessarily a good thing - a tour of the town can be easily accomplished in a couple of hours (it is hardly a sprawling metropolis!)

The highlights of our stay were Cullen Bay (lovely village atmosphere with great views and restuarants) and the Mindal Beach Market (Thurs / Sun - truly a one-off/must-see).My advice, hire a car and stay in Cullen Bay and kick back and enjoy the luxury - then go and explore the Northern Territory.

To put the Atrium in context all the hotels on this strip look to deliver the same standards of accommdation / service - don't expect city standards of luxury compared to Sydney / Brisbane etc... you will be very disappointed.

My wife and I stayed at the Novotel Atrium in Darwin for 5 nights in October 2006, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had specifically sought an ocean view, and were not disappointed. Our room on the 5th. (top) floor was excellent, and provided an uninterrupted view over Darwin Harbour. This hotel is nearly twenty years old, but is still in very good shape. Our room was large and could have accommodated four people. We stayed during the "build up" weather season, with high daytime temperatures and humidity, and were grateful for the excellent airconditioner in our room. The hotel is situated on the Esplanade, only one block from the restaurants/pubs of Mitchell Street and the Smith Street Mall, and is within easy walking distance of the CBD. Lovely parkland is across the road. Luggage storage is available, and upon our return to the hotel after a two night absence, during a tour of Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, our excess luggage had been removed from storage and returned to our room. There is a guest laundry on the ground floor with washing machines and dryers, for those guests who want to wash their own clothes. Although we did not dine at night at the hotel's restaurant, we breakfasted there each morning, and enjoyed the quiet ambience and range of foods.

Not bad by Darwin standards. Very friendly, efficient service, clean and good-sized room. Was a bit disappointed that Internet was not free (not told this) and there was renovations going on so the pool was not available (but they did provide an alternative pool courtesy of the hotel down the road). Overall, was happy and thought it was good value. Would stay again.

I stayed for 2 nights in harbour facing room; it was very nice, spacious, good size fridge, gorgeous prints on wall, & with a lounge area. Very clean, but bathroom was a disappointment; is in desperate need of renovation. Shower area was very small & clostrophobic ; it had a horrible dark green curtain around it which made it worse - kept it open all the time when taking a shower. Shower fittings, tiles & grout were also old & dated. However, very impresed with the design of this hotel; atrium has real hanging plants all around it; there is a stream of water lined by rocks, running in amongst the low tables & tub chairs in the bar area, which are surrounded by lush, green ferns & palms, making for a refreshing & asthetically pleasing & relaxing environment (esp. for drinks at the end of a day of touring). Pool area was run-down though - not very pleasant to be at; restaurant was nothing flash; breakfast was std buffet style with both cold & hot food. Hotel is about 5 minutes walk from main shopping strip (Mitchell St). The lifts opened into an area near the pool & not in the main reception area, which offered some privacy ie., you could go from your room to the pool with just your togs, without having everyone in reception looking at you. Staff were helpful. Overall, nice hotel, but I wish they would do something about their bathrooms & pool area!!
