“Great Location”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

We loved this hotel, it has great location, great value and a fantastic restaurant called the Finz. The staff were friendly and helpful. We spent a lot of time in the bar area and found it to be very relaxing. The spa was cold, and I would have liked the water to be warmer. As we were there on Good Friday we found that there was no housekeeping services and the restaurant was not open all day, which did perplex us somewhat as tourists are still around. It didn't faze us so much as we were leaving on the Sat anyway and we found other places that were open.

Room Tip: Views of the ocean would be best

I was disappointed in the Mantra. The reviews were on the whole good last year and the position is great but... It's tired and the staff are only just on the right side of helpful. Nobody to assist with luggage, little information offered and the bar closed at 9.30pm even to residents on a Friday night. The laundry is out sourced and VERY expensive. The first time that I have seen a pair of pyjamas charged as two items! No complimentary water in the room and my room was next to a very noisy group of women so sound proofing not good. Ask for above the 4th floor otherwise the view isn't good. Our breakfast was included but I had to go and get the documentation twice to prove it and was asked again on checkout. The security is non existent. Anyone can walk in and go up to the rooms which have no safe, no spy hole and no extra locks. Sorry I won't be back - also too expensive for what you get.

Room Tip: If you do chose the Mantra ask for sea view above the fourth floor

In a nutshell - for the dollars charged - not worth it? Booked in for a few nights. Put out "do not disturb" for a catchup sleep. Door knocks by staff twice. Phone calls twice, asking when I was leaving. Just did not get it? Third phonecall by which time I'd given up ever getting a sleep-in, was asked to move rooms as they'd stuffd up. So, packed up all our gear, and they didn't even offer to help move it? (had partner's stuff to move as well as my own?). Wasted most of a morning. So, carted luggage to next room, which turned out to be outside the lifts - so the groaning of the lifts were day and night, with the doorbell dinging constantly. Not even a free bottle of wine to compensate for inconvenience. Couldn't be r'sed to ask to move again, but, paid the price in lack of sleep. Fellow stayers alighting from the lift, drunk and disorderly through the next two nights. Nice. And none of that is to mention the musty dank carpet smell? And the air cond, which seemed to have one setting only - off/humid or on/freezing. Uncomfortable. Nasty. Plus, the bed was hard and not comfy - more like a backpackers el-cheapo one. Desperately needs topper, if charging these prices? And restaurant food ordinary. Would go elsewhere to eat? Pool area nice, but, overlooked by cafe/restaurant, so, on display totally!! Toot paper flimsy/rough. Toiletries basic.

On a postive - the room space was spacious, and the view was good of the park/esplanade/harbour, although the western sun was a bit much heatwise, but, have to say, a couple of sunsets were pretty - but second room had other balconies overlooking windows so curtains had to be shut for privacy - poor design? Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, even if done under duress? Management couldn't care less though. And the room service breakfast was good - not great, but good. Yet again overpriced though? Overall clean, but the grout in the bath was grotty, and needed replacing, and the sofa was body-odourish/stinky? Decor was a bit daggy, but, not repulsive? Kitchen setup good and handy, but hot water inconsistent. Close to the shops/cafes and suchlike. Laundry facilities good, but, exhaust fan very noisy - did head in? Shower head good - towels good enough.

To top it off - asked for an extra late checkout as flight out was late, and was denied. Insult to injury. NASTY!!

I stayed with immediate and some extended family in a 3 bedroom apartment. It was the just the right size for what we needed. There was a big living/dining area that made it perfect for family gatherings and planning for the days activities. The bedrooms were large enough to get a couple of suitcases and a trundle bed.
On the down side the room, and hotel needed some fixing and updating. In the apartment, there was only 2 mirrors, 1 in each of the bathrooms. This made getting ready a pain, especially when there are 5 girls there. The lack of effective exhaust in the bathroom, made turning on the dryer a little concerning, with the walls and ceiling 'sweating' profusely, causing a few concerns. on a wet, steaming, drippy mess.
Also there was no furniture on the verandah, so wasn't able to sit and take in the view.
The foyer is great and cool when you walk in. There was a great tourist and travel place, they were very friendly and eager to share about some of the great places to visit. The hotel is very conveniently located, with a short walk to the main street, which has bars, cafes, shops, supermarket etc. Which made the apartment living, very comfortable. I had limited contact with the staff, but the staff I did see where friendly and helpful.
Overall it was a great experience, and we all did thoroughly enjoy ourselves, and would probably stay there again if I were to return to Darwin. The rooms just need a little more love and some attention to detail.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a harbor view, as it was truly spectacular looking out over the ocean.

We have very mixed feeling about this hotel, Australia's most used phrase 'no worries' does not apply to this hotel. We stayed a total of three nights in the Mantra - the first night was fine and we got the Harbour View Room that we had paid for. Unfortunatly we then went on an organised trip into the Kakadu National Park which included one night in the park and one night back at the Mantra. When we checked back into the hotel the trip organisers had booked us a cheaper City View Room and the next night, which our agents had booked, was the more expensive Harbour View room. We were told by the hotel that we would have to move out of the City View Room and into the Harbour View room after one night. When I asked if we could just stay in the City View room and have a credit for the extra room price I was told that wasn't possible. Eventually, surprise, surprise we were told we could pay extra and have the Harbour View room for the two nights. We had to sit to one side while all this was sorted, being made to feel as if we had done something wrong. The harbour view rooms are lovely and the hotel is in a good position but next time we will stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: The Harbour View rooms are lovely as you get a lovely sunset in the evening

We recently stayed in a one bedroom apartment with a sea view on the seventh floor. The location of Mantra on the Esplanade is great, just a short stroll to restaurants, shops and supermarkets. Lovely views of the water, although, only a small balcony with no outdoor furniture.
The lounge/kitchen area has a nice fresh feel to it. The bathroom, however, was a bit tired and in need of an update. We would definitely recommend staying here, as the location alone forgives any shortcomings.

Room Tip: Ask for a room 4th floor or higher for a good view.

I'm staying in a one bedroom apartment which is very good and will be my choice when I return to Darwin. I'm a frequent visitor for business and haven't stayed at the Mantra before.

The apartments have everything you need but miss the mark on three fronts.

As I travel for business I often work in the hotel room at night rather than hit the town. I like to have the TV on in the background. The Mantra TV however doesn't have all of the local channels and the reception on half the channels is very poor. They could fix this easily.

Another important business traveller need is security. The Mantra scores the lowest I've seen for a long time in this area. There is no card access control in the lifts. As a result, anyone can enter the hotel and arrive at your door! Also there is no safe in the room. For international visitors that need to secure their passport etc, I can't recommend this hotel for this reason. For domestic business visitors that are experienced in providing their own security, it's great.

Finally, the restaurant menu needs a LOT of work, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby.

I didn't try their internet / WiFi services etc as most business travellers like me bring their own these days.

Room Tip: Ask for a bay view room.

Dear Melbourne Travelr,
Thank you for staying with us at Mantra on the Esplanade recently.
It seems overall you were happy with your stay and are pleased you have shared the areas which have let us down. In regards to the TV we are currently working on the Digital component of our MATV system and this has caused some issues in the past, but have now found the main fault and repairing as we speak. AS for the Hotel security, I understand your concerns with not have key card lift activation. This has never been in place in this Hotel and to date we have not had any security issues. We have security cameras throughout the Hotel and also 24 hour security with floor checks all during the night and day. The executive Chef is about to launch a new menu within the next two weeks and we are very excited at the new direction he is taking in regards to the style f cuisine offered.
if you are returning to Darwin in the future we would be more than happy to look after you and the issue you have raised should not be of concern moving forward.
Thank you once again for your feedback as without this we would not be able to strive for our ultimate goal of being our favorite Hotel to stay at in Darwin
Kind Regards
David Brill
