Had to take a tour group here as part of historical Darwin tour. Whilst the display is good , we were there about 1pm and after 15 minutes most of the tour group wanted to leave. Nothing wrong with exhibits being wet season and no rain yet it was just too hot for visitors that are not acclimatized. Would’ve been much better if their itinerary was for early in the morning.

I visited here so I could see for myself how things were back in the day for those unfortunates that spent time here . Poor Souls .

We dropped in to the Fannie Bay Gaol on a Saturday morning after driving past it so many times.

Entry was by donation and it is run by MAGNT. The customer service gentleman on the front counter was an absolute legend with perfect service. He explained the buildings before we went in.

When we were here, there were a few nesting Curlews and Plovers that were causing a bit of chaos, swooping people within the grounds (so just be aware). Though we were fully briefed on where to avoid before entering.

The buildings are interesting especially the cells and the gallows. We had 2 small kids in tow and we found the grounds easy to navigate even with a pram.

It was definitely an experience to be had whilst in Darwin. We will definitely bring interstate visitors for an inexpensive and interesting day trip.

This museum is open only on Wednesday and Saturday, free entrance. This is Darwin’s original penal institution from 1883-1979, and us now a museum. It’s crude facilities and chilling gallows serve as a grim reminder of what life in prison was really like. Time well spent.
