Darwin City Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #3 of 17 Darwin B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 20, 2011

We arrived at 6 am in the morning, and our travelagent had not booked this night for us, but Janette had arranged that we could sleep a couple of hours in her sons bedroom, after a trip from Belgium to Darwin approx 19 hours of flights and some hours inbetween, this meant the world to us. We have stayed a little less than a week and each morning Janette would make us breakfast with fresh mango's and home made yoghurt, delicious! As we had not planned very much we just asked Janette what Darwin had to offer and thanks to her guidance we've been to the Darwin Zoo and saw these wonderful sugargliders, we went to Darwin Museum - beautiful aboriginal art, and we have met an amazing aboriginal artist Louise! Whenever Roger went somewhere he always asked if he could drop us somewhere near the city center or the marina. I really enjoyed the swimmingpool and the beauty of the garden and the silence of the place. It was close to everything in Darwin so we did a lot of the sightseeing by foot. Thank you once again, dear Roger and Janette and Jess to help us out with everything. We are definitively coming back next time when we are Darwin. Big kisses, Kitty xxx and Yves!

Circumstances meant that for the first week of my tour of Australia, I was on my own before being joined by my family. Darwin and Kakadu seemed daunting, but such was the warmth and helpful welcome and support I received from Janette and her husband Roger, this leg of my journey was the best of all (I spent 8 weeks in Australia and NZ). Janette emailed me several times before I arrived, reassuring me and arranging for my arrival at 6.15 in the morning. The room was spotlessly clean, with all mod cons (inc. the essential aircon) and I was made to feel part of the family straight away - integrating immediately with other guests, and being dropped in town by car by Janette, and given so many suggestions for activities. Janette organised my Kakadu trip ( favourable prices), and early morning breakfasts, shuttle bus to airport etc, whilst Roger did my laundry! It was just fab. The B & B is 10 minutes walk (at most) from the town centre, and quietly located in pleasant residential area. Whether its a business trip or holiday (as mine was) I cannot recommend this B & B high enough. Two lovely hosts. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

If you wonder how minimalistic a B&B can be, then you should ultimatively stay at Darwin City B&B. Your host, J. Steel will great you with a handful of instructions concerning the AC, the milk, the towels, the lock, and, and, but not a single word about how your trip was or what is worth of seeing in Darwin. Breakfast is another lesson on minimalism, though J. had business in town so we had to be fast. All together, an interesting experience helping to value the generosity of our previous hosts on this wonderful trip to Australia.

My husband and I based ourselves at Steeles B&B for our two nights in Darwin. Janette was quick to respond to my booking enquiry, and gave us information on the airport shuttle cost, location etc. Communication was extremely easy. Note that the airport shuttle operators know this place only at "Steeles" rather than "Darwin City B&B", which is the name of the website we booked under. Janette was waiting for us on arrival and was extremely friendly and helpful.

The B&B is clean and welcoming and served as a brilliant base for us. We walked to Mindil Beach Market (~10 mins walk) and returned to Steele's in the dark but felt very safe. We walked to rent a car from a place on Mitchell St (the non big name car rental companies there offer unlimited kms on rentals, whereas the big rental co. names at the airport have 100km/day limits) and the main shops in town are only 10 or 15 minutes away. We did a day trip to Litchfield NP and were able to borrow some pool towels for the day. We didn't swim in Steele's pool but heard from fellow visitors that it was great.

Janette's breakfast was plentiful and filling. I would stay here again!

Janette, Roger and Jessica are great hosts and extremely accommodating. My husband, in-laws and myself arrived in the middle of the night and our rooms were ready when we arrived. Our hosts were very helpful in giving us advice about where to go and the best way to get there. The rooms are comfortable, clean and nicely stocked with a fridge. We were convienently located near the coast, marina, golf course, and city center. We could have easily walked, and did, to many of the above. Great breakfast, too. We would return in a heartbeat! Thanks for a great visit.

Room Tip: We emailed Janette and she was very responsive and our reservations were done perfectly.

I stopped in Darwin for 2 nights on my solo tour of Australia. I was happy to find a B&B option (it is also called Darwin City B&B), especially because most of the accommodations are either overpriced hotel chains or student hostels which can be quite loud and rundown. I was hesitant to book it at first because it seemed expensive but many hotels were double the cost so I think it is priced fairly for the Darwin market. Looking back, it was a good value considering what the inn offers and I am so glad that I chose to stay with The Steeles.

I took the easy, airport shuttle which dropped me right in front of the driveway. Roger was there to greet me and he gave me the house tour. I met Janette later and she offered suggestions and directions on what to do at night. The house is in a true neighborhood, which is more interesting to me than being in a charmless, touristy area, and is perfectly situated and within easy walking distance of the center of town, Mindl Beach, and Cullen Bay.

My room had a sitting room with a small tv, spacious bedroom with an over-sized chair and bureau, and an ensuite bathroom. It was comfortable and clean with a wall unit a/c. Breakfast was plentiful and served in the backyard terrace overlooking the pool and lovely gardens. One unique feature of the area is the number and variety of colorful birds. I'm not a bird watcher but I enjoyed hearing the melodic chirps in the morning while having breakfast.

Janette and Roger were nice enough to drop me at the botanic gardens one morning and from there I walked to the museum and was able to take the bus back. Janette also brought me to the train station when I had to catch The Ghan to go to my next destination. It is a short distance to the station from their house but was so much easier for me to have a drive because of my luggage.

Janette and Roger are super friendly, helpful, and professional innkeepers. They really take the time to ensure that their guests have a personal and meaningful experience in their city. If I have the chance to visit Darwin again, I would definitely stay with The Steeles.

I was drawn to the Steeles' property by other reviews that raving about their hospitality. I contacted Janette and we exchanged several e-mails. She referred me to a wonderful tour group. Turns out our dates didn't align with any availability at the B & B, but Janette just kept helping me arrange a very special trip for my family in the Darwin area. It is so heartwarming to work with people who go above and beyond just because it's the right thing to do. Thank you Janette!
