“Horrible experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2012

This hostel was paid for me as a part of a tour. I would never stay in such a place if I paid for it. It might be the right place for you if you want to party all night, but it is definitely not the right place for you if you are travelling and getting up at 5am. There was no hot water (although I did not mind because it was hot for me in Darwin and cold water was quite nice) and some of the rooms are VERY small. A/C works only is some rooms. The place is VERY noisy, especially the parts around the pool. There is always people around the pool so no one actually goes in the pool because everyone would stare at you. The toilets and showers were not very clean although I understand it is difficult to keep the amenities clean with all the partying people around. I do not recommend.

We thought we could stay at someones place in Darwin what didn't work out so we had to take the last available hostel there was: Youth Shack. Terrible name and the performance isn't much better. All other hostels were completely booked, only this still had several rooms available... not a good sign. Extremely noisy (no real windows, just tiltable glass fins) double room on ground floor for Aus$90 per night (already with max discount). Cheap for high season in Darwin but not good value compared to other places and taking into account what you get. Toilets extremely dirty in the evening since everybody at the internal bar uses them as well. However they were more or less clean in the morning. There is a tour booking office at the front but the staff is not very motivated. The corridor was smelly and I would never use the pool (what nobody did). Mitchell Street itself is Darwin's party area (all hostels are there) so if you are keen on getting drunk every night you might enjoy it. If you don't want to hang out with backpackers only, it's probably the wrong place to be. Your experience might be different and for Darwin the price is normal but I have been to nice hotels in New Zealand that were cheaper.
Pick another hostel if you can...

I was going to write a kind but firm review pointing out the good things about this hostel (nice staff) and then suggest they may like to sort out their hot water system. But after looking at the previous reviews, where a heap of people had the same issue we had, and after learning from one of the staff that they had the same issue LAST YEAR....
I just want to say- we can put up with a noisy-drunk-trashy bars under the room full of 20-something Brits acting like they are auditioning for Geordie Shore, and we can put up with basic rooms with limited air-con and old fixtures , but having only cold water for four days was ridiculous. We didnt pay $100 a night for that. We've been travelling for fourteen months right round the world. I can accept cold water in the undeveloped world, thats normal, this is just poor maintanance or upgrading. Owners, sort it out, this wasn't the first time by far.

Stayed here for few days before and after going to Kakadu.
The first half of the week the girls bathroom was an inch deep in water and the showers cold. The second week the leak was fixed and some showers luke warm!
The amount of times I went to get my door card fixed was rediculous because It just decides randomly when to work or not.
It's on mitchell street so is quite a loud hostel.
The kitchen has no utensils/pans you have to borrow them each time from reception and cutlery I think you have to pay for!!!
You do get free food some nights if you buy drinks from the bar! :-)
Reception are friendly and helpful!
They have a laundry, bar, pool, tour desk, computers and wifi although not free!

Expectations were low - I don't really count as a youth any more and I assumed it would be like its sister hostel Chilli's, which is appalling.

It is thankfully much better though. The staff were efficient. We asked for a quiet room and we got one, which is quite an achievement for this part of town. The double room was basic but had everything you need and was clean (the lighting was bad but that seems to be standard in Australian hostels).

The showers were always hot (maybe I was lucky?) and pretty clean.

Biggest downer: I hated seeing the poor blue-tongued lizard in its tank in reception.

I stayed in a private room as my family was visiting in Darwin with me and I just it would be better. Room was exactly as expected, clean, fresh but basic.but I

Showers were cold I kind of expect that when staying in a backpackers. AC worked well and my room had a little TV which was nice.

I think the $30 key deposit is abit steep but its only a deposit so I will move on with my life.

The bar was as expected. Cheap, Nasty, but heaps of fun. Freindly and well cleaned. Very nice little spot to have an arvo refreshment.
Thanks for a great stay
