Desert Gardens Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Yulara
Reviewed October 8, 2013

In the middle of nowhere this is the second best (I think) hotel in the Ayers Rock complex. Stylish gardens with motley rooms. The only gripe is that if your rooms are on the 1st floor you have to lug your suitcases up the stairs - no lifts or ramps. A great swimming pool, large bar, and a dullish restaurant. We walked the 5 minutes into the 'centre' where there are some much cheaper but good value places to eat.

If I could I would give 3.5 stars...but I can't so a combination of price and a few service gaffes push it down to 3. Goes without saying I guess (and you can read the other reviews) that this place is expensive in comparison to normal hotel prices in a capital city...but it's 4 hours from Alice and effectively the Ayers Rock Hotel is almost your only choice (even though it does cater for different levels). Staff by and large were good, friendly and helpful. So they stuffed up my wife and daughters pre-ordered birthday cake BUT the waiter on the night improvised on his own account when he could not find the cake nor a record of it and provided a well presented 'Birthday Plate' with greetings in chocolate on it...nice touch. When the morning coffee's did not turn up until pretty much at the end of breakfast...they were complimentary. There was only one staff member (interestingly in the more up market Sails) who had a complete attitude bypass...the rest were good. The rooms were functional and clean but I would have expected them to better appointed for the cost...but they did work. First day the room was not serviced until I pointed it out at 5 pm...and it was then fixed. We thought the Desert Gardens offered a good compromise between the more expensive Sails (and we were not sure for what) and the self catered Emu Apartments. You can use the facilities at Sails and at the end of the day the rooms are perfectly functional so I would not pay the extra. The IGA store in the main complex is well stocked (again more pricey that you will be used to) and you can get pretty much anything you need there for your travels. The Astro Tour (the 8:30 departure from the square) was a real highlight and very well done.

the room itself was large and clean with a very good air conditioning system - so good we had to turn it down as it was too cold!! The staff at the reception were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast is plentiful, best to book the breakfast in advance as I understand there are better deals than buying on the day. There is wifi but it is not free.

We stayed at Desert Gardens Hotel for 7 days and could not fault it. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and honest. Our own ground coffee, left in the room after we checked out, was placed in the lost property and was located by staff immediately when we inquired.
It is a small thing but these things matter. The food at the restaurant Arnguli Grill was excellent as were the friendly staff. We ate there most nights and were not disappointed.
The prices are similar to Sydney prices and considering the remote location, the fresh produce was varied and excellent. If you think the prices are slightly more, then think of the location and the cost of getting the fresh produce there! You are not in the middle of Europe..it is remote...really remote! Incredible landscape, worth a visit...I was surprised to read the rooms were small as found them much bigger than most standard rooms, particularly English Hotels, and there is a sitting area outside each room...The pool was lovely next to some grassed area under shady gums.... Also so quiet at night and the stars!!!! Beds also very comfortable and very clean. Close to shopping centre and all amenities.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Best Wishes Jennifer

Room Tip: ask staff, very helpful.

Yes, Ayers Rock is expensive but this what You need to be prepared when You come to Uluru, everything will be expensive.

The hotel itself is good. The room was big and there was enough space to walk. It has a terrace You could sit outside. The room was clean and the furniture was up to standard. The bath room was a bit basic but nothing to complain about, everything worked.

The reception was friendly and efficient.

You will need to check out at 10am, only downside.

This was a pleasantly laid out hotel in desert gardens. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and pleasantly presented with big window leading to patio. The room had no safe and there was no wifi in the hotel although sister hotel, The Sails hotel had free wifi and also a very reasonably priced restaurant. On this complex you were able to use the facilities of the other hotels in the resort and also charge costs to your hotel of stay. Hospitality room was available including a shower for last day of stay.

Room Tip: Ask for Uluru view

Our room was quite basic. We booked a twin room, so had a double bed each, but there wasn't much room to walk about the room. Shower took a while to drain, but that's the only complaint about the bathroom. Yes it's dear to eat, but you are staying in the middle of no where, it's expected. The rooms could of been cheaper, but then I don't think there is anywhere cheaper to stay in Yulara. All owned by the same company, they can set the prices at what they like.

We stayed two nights and our room wasn't cleaned during our stay, would of been nice if it was.

The staff were friendly and could not fault them on anything and the Desert Awakenings and Sounds of Silence tours are worth looking in to. Again pricey, but we enjoyed both of them.
