Desert Gardens Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Yulara
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed at Sails in the Desert and although they were at the end stage of their recent reservation it was a most enjoyable time. The staff were friendly and helpful although at the time they still seemed to be coming to grips with the new restaurant and bar format. The siting and layout of the hotel was wonderful and as with all services at Yulara it was designed to maximise the natural offerings of the area. A visit well worth while.

This place is way overated and way overpriced. Service is apalling. Room was dirty. Lighting is too poor to read or to even see in part of the room. TV didn't work (why would it - looks like a 1970 model). Clock didn't work. Wake-up call didn't work. Tour desk has only one person who keeps you waiting for over 1/2 hour, then doesn't have information. Restaurant can't cope with a 1/3 full house and takes over an hour to bring dinner (which is really expensive). Go to the bar for a beer and you are greeted with an annoyed "WHAT DO YA WANT?" and then told to pay $10 for a beer. Staff always react to complaints with a "I'm sorry but there is nothing I can do". Free shuttle bus pulls up 20 metres ahead of posted stop then doesn't wait for people to reach it before pulling away. The list is longer, but what is the point? They have you captive here if you wan to visit Uluru. Terrible service. Poor value. But a great natural wonder.

I was with a group of demanding customers in this hotel during our trip to Australia. Hotel nicely located, with some magnificent views of Uluru. Close to the mall. Clean tidy rooms, a swimming pool about Friendly service, good food. In my opinion one of the best places in the area. I will be back there with our tourist groups and Incentive.

We recently visited the Red Centre and stayed 2 nights at Desert Gardens Hotel. The Hotel is comfortable and clean and is well located within walking distance of shops and restaurants and viewing area of Uluru. The Ayers Rock Resort is made up of several hotels and and shops and staff accommodation in a mini community within sight of Uluru. There are buses to hop on for other destinations within the Resort Area or you can walk. Bus tours collect you from your hotel for day trips and can be organised from your hotel, but as we did, I would recommend organising or discussing your travel plans with a travel agent as there are many options. I would recommend the "Sounds of Silence" dinner under the stars for a magic night of food and wine in the desert surrounds. A bit pricey but well worth the cost.

Normally hotel resorts out in the middle of nowhere can be very average but this hotel was just fantastic. I honestly can not think of one thing bad to say that about is.

I originally wanted to stay at Sails Resort fearing the worst but they were renovating so I went with Desert Gardens and I'm so glad I did.

I had read comments on Trip Advisor about insects being an issue but I did not see any, both inside the room and out. I did stay in May so perhaps that is a good time.

I stayed in a room with a view of the rock so I would recommend you pay extra for that room.

The restaurant was excellent. Everything we tried but top quality especially breakfast. Pancake/omlette chef will cook anything, anyway you want it.

Very friendly staff throughout.

The weather was sensational in May. Very dry which was an issue for me but perfect temperature and blue skies every day. More on the cool side which is great when you're climbing a very large rock. Why would you want to do that in the heat?

Walk or drive out to the street entry and away from street lights and look up at the sky. Expect to be amazed!

Room Tip: Get the room with view of the rock. You have to pay extra but it's worth it. Staying in a room w...

Oh, where do we start? Let's start with the staff. It's youthful, optimistic, fun energy permeates every conversation. They look and act like they actually love their jobs. How about the property? It is gorgeous. Strolling along the brick pathways under the full canopy of stars is so peaceful. And the rooms? The hotel should have feared that they'd need to physically extract us. The rooms are big and airy, as is the bathroom. We had a second-story balcony view of Uluru/Ayers Rock. What a way to awaken in the morning after sweeping open the curtains. Its restaurants are expensive, but then again, Ayers Rock is a long way from anything, so getting food there can't be cheap. One workaround is to have the big buffet breakfast and then to walk over to the supermarket to load up on picnic food for lunch. Staying at the Desert Gardens Hotel was a magical experience.

We were not too sure what to expect...reviews were not very consistant or encouraging. Prices were very high with little choice . However we were pleasantly suprised--the deluxe room was up to 4* but then so it should have been for the money!
Do NOT eat at the Ayres Wok noodle food shop in Yulara----It seemed reasonably priced but was rubbish and ended up in the garbage!!

Room Tip: We had a deluxe room but without a view of Uluru---good choice as the rooms with a view cost more. T...
