This was our first visit to Uluru and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel has recently been renovated which was good. The room we had was large and spacious with a big bathroom including a full size bath. Very well maintained and cleaned. Staff were all very friendly and helpful and nothing seemed any trouble at all. I had reviews that rooms were not good but we could not complain at all (we even checked for dust in our room, none to be found & looked for mould in the bathroom, but nothing!). We have stayed at 5 star hotels around the world that did not match this room. The only issue is the walk from reception to our room was a bit of a distance so could be a problem if your dragging your luggage especially in the heat! I would also suggest that they offer more room and breakfast options as we were have preferred that option if it was available. We were unable to get into the restaurant on a Friday night for dinner which was disappointing as we didn't realise we needed to book and perhaps staff should advise guests about this. We would certainly stay here again on our next visit which we hope will be sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: Ask for a King Size room with a rock view (it's worthwhile having the larger rooms apparently).

It has been 15 years (and two children later) since my last visit to Uluru and our stay at Desert Gardens was perfect for a mini break in the NSW school holidays. I had read poor reviews about the hotel needing a renovation but I have nothing but praise for the hotel. Sure its not 5 stars but it was clean, comfortable and quiet and apart from sleeping there in the evening and a lunchtime nap it served us very well. I think people have to remember that it is in the middle of Australia and in the desert. The staff are usually backpackers or young people on holidays. I couldn't fault our stay there and we all had a great time.

Room Tip: We had two rooms in the Black Fuscia Section - away from the pool area. Very quiet and peaceful. Did not have views of the Rock but then we didn't ask for them !

Uluru - a great place to visit. Desert Gardens - awaiting its turn for fixes. There is a reason that Sails in the Desert (adjacent hotel, same owner) is undergoing a remodel. Desert Gardens must be next. In short - broken toilet, shower curtain too short to reach tub so water goes onto bathroom floor, safe too small for laptops, sliding glass door barely closed with struggle, lack of controls for room heat / cooling and way too hot on cool winter nights. King bed reserved but not provided. No reason given. Was only reminded that preferences are not guaranteed. No big deal, but the staff could say something nicer than the equivalent of "we don't have to". Despite all this we still had a nice visit, and there wasn't a better choice for our lodging. Expect a few problems and enjoy your visit.

We stayed in the Deluxe Rock view rooms which we wern't expecting as we had booked just a standard room. The view was beautiful and we were touched by the thoughtful card and bottle of bubbles on ice for our Anniversary. A very Special touch! The rooms were large, comfortable and clean as was the Bathroom. My only complaints are that the bathroom floor got very wet as the shower is over the bath and the curtain doesn't hold the water back no matter which way you try. Also, the LONG walk from Reception to the room is tiring when lugging heavy suitcases and dragging them up 2 flights of stairs was ridiculous. I truly don't know how elderly or disabled people would cope with this.

I booked Desert Gardens only 2 weeks before our stay via a travel agent to give my husband a surprise getaway. We thoroughly enjoyed it and lapped up the positives, just happy to experience Uluru and Kata Tjuta in our short stay. I didn't know till I read the reviews that there were rooms with views to the Rock. LOL.
Tips & Observations:
+Uluru is NOT a short walk across the road from the hotel. It's an interesting 20 minute bus ride.
+There was no toaster or microwave but a kettle and fridge in our room. Breakfast at the Desert Gardens restaurant is $30-35 so buy cereal etc at the IGA supermarket in the Town Centre in the motel complex if you want to save some money. The IGA prices were ok considering where we were.
+Yes, the meals at the Arguli Grill are a little pricey but suck it up and enjoy the fine dining, the delicious food and superb service in a delightful reastaurant. Cheaper eat-out options are available in the Town Centre where the IGA is.
+The pool looked lovely. Towels and deckchairs are supplied. Limited food & drink options available poolside.
+Nice capuccinos available at the bar just outside the Arguli Grill restaurant.
+The motel is set out in such a way that wheelchairs have good access.
+The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Deckchairs are set out under the gum trees in the shade.
+The Visitors Centre next to the Reception building is good for souvenirs and finding out about the history of the area.
+All tour buses leave from and can be booked at Reception. The process is very organised. Staff are very helpful.
+ There is free shuttle bus that operates in the complex 10:30 am-midnight. (Stops 6-6:30pm)
+"Sounds Of Silence" dinner is great. Endless food and drink. Cost a lot but had forgotten the price by the time we went on it. Again, suck it up and enjoy the unique experience.
+Uluru Express bus is very handy but $50 return. It leaves and returns several set times per day.We got the 9:30 am bus that got us there in time for the 10am free guided tour around the Rock. TAKE A HAT AND WATER. Its a 20 minute walk to the Uluru Cultural Centre if you want souvenirs, food or a toilet.
+Climbing the Rock is discouraged for cultural reasons. Rock climb can be closed when temp is over 36C, when it rains, there's low cloud, high wind or a death or injury on it.
+ I enjoyed the part of the tour that took in the views of Kata Tjuta more than the walk around it.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the Rock are available. Rooms with flat access are available close to the pool, restaurant and Reception. Operation of the AC is a bit tricky.
